arrived in perfect shape. May I possibly impose and ask for the splash-1
picture as well (and a big version if you've got it)? It's a great example of
freezing time, and when I went back to your website to look at the slit-scan
photo I realized it would be a great accompaniment to my discussion of the
instantaneous shutter. As before, if you'd rather not, or you don't have a big
version, that's no problem, but if you're amenable to that, I'd be honored.
Thanks again! -Andrew
My article on "InCamera Masking with 35mm cameras" was published in the March
issue of ABC of Photography, and online magazine.
My photograph of a sneeze was included in a 1999 edition of a Time Life Student
Library book on the Human Body. The image appears on pages 46-47 of the book,
ISBN 0-7835-1353-4
I was quoted in the July 21 issue of Wired News, an online magazine located at
http://www.wired.com/news/ The quotation appeared in the Business section in an
article about IPIX -
An article of mine was published in the Electronic Imaging Newsletter of the
International Society for Optical Engineering. "Digital Camera Improvisation"
appeared on page 2 of the November 1999 issue of this publication. It dealt
with adapting an inexpensive scanner mechanism to a conventional camera and
ending up with a digital camera that emulates the operating characteristics and
performance of sophisticated digital camera systems.
Other Service and Professional Activities:
I gave a two hour guest lecture at Charlie Boyd's Motion Picture colloquium
class on Monday, March 22, 1999 from 10 am till 12 noon in the Webb Auditorium.
I was one of three judges for the monthly (May) meeting of the Camera Rochester
Photo Club on May 7, 1999 from 7 pm till 11 pm at the Church of the Atonement
on Westfall Road at the invitation of Dan Neuberger.
On July 9-12, 1999 I assisted the Greater Rochester Visitors Association as
local "guide" in a project called the "1999 Rochester Shoot Out" where the
Visitors Association invited a group of professional travel photographers
under the direction of Carl Purcell (ex Popular Photography travel photography
columnist) to photograph the greater Rochester area.
I was a consultant to the Eastman Kodak Company on a matter involving
cross-processing for films.
I made a panoramic photograph commemorating the 50th year of the College of
Ceramics at Alfred University.
Along with several colleagues, during the Winter quarter of last year, I
participated in presenting an instructional module to new Eastman Kodak
employees on the topic of Densitometry, Sensitometry and Tone Reproduction.
I donated two photographs to the Cicero-North Syracuse High School November 4,
1999 Art Auction. The proceeds benefit the photography program at the school.
I donated six opportunities to have an avant-garde portrait photograph made to
the WXXI Auction. The broadcasting organization benefits from the sale of these
opportunities.
I "donated" for no remuneration the rights for Bogen Corporation to use one of
my high speed photographs in an ad campaign for a special synchronizer they
distribute. The credit line included that I was from RIT.
I was on the board of examiners of a MS degree thesis produced by W.Attwood at
RMIT located in Melbourne, Australia.
I again participated in the MFA walkthrough and was accorded the privilege of
making my opinion heard (and presumably count) at the end of the Fall quarter.
This is something I had stopped doing due to my perceived reluctance on the
part of MFA faculty to include me in the deliberations. That apparently is
water over the dam because I felt quite welcome this time. I hope to rekindle
the relationship and, in fact, offer another course designed specifically for
graduate level fine art photography majors.
I developed a distance learning course for the Alumni Affaris office on the
subject of the Phoenix Process. It is too bad that this had to be cancelled due
to low demand because there was a lot of effort expended on this especially
since all the support I was promised to begin with never materialized so i had
to do all the web design and instructional design myself.
Supporting evidence for this activity is this snippet of a communication from
Carole Sack and Christina Mancini
Hi, Andy. It looks like you have a great start!!! But I realize that I
have not been clear about how the participants will end up in your
workshop.
Alumni Affairs will be advertising the various workshop offerings to
alumni - either through a paper mailing or email. Christina in Alumni
Affairs will want from you a description of your workshop as well as any
special requirements the participants will need to do the workshop.
Alumni who want to participate will sign up (electronically) with Alumni
Affairs - and pay a workshop fee, just as is done for the on-campus alumni
workshops that are being held next month. I do not know all the details
of this aspect of the on-line workshops - please contact Christina Mancini
if you would like more information about this.
Anyway, when the participants enter your workshop they will already be
enrolled through Alumni Affairs. I'll think some more about how your workshop information could be
presented and get back to you again -

note from Chrsitina Mancini:
Thanks for the email. I think that your site is wonderful! It is
exactly what we hope to do for alumni who for some reason or another
cannot physically come back to campus, or who want to take classes
online. The alumni will be able to access the site during a 2 week
period in June, and will do the work at that time. Our hope in
establishing this program is that alumni who are geographically removed
from RIT can take "classes without quizzes" from RIT professors.
I am sorry that ETC was not more helpful. I have not had much occasion
to work with them directly, but hopefully, since this program idea is
still so new, they are ironing out any kinks they may have (I know I
am!)
Along with several colleagues, during the Winter quarter of last year, I
participated in presenting an instructional module to new Eastman Kodak
employees on the topic of Densitometry, Sensitometry and Tone Reproduction.
I organized several pizza parties for Imaging and Photographic Technology
students at my personal expense. In fact, I have never recovered any funds for
social activities that I participated in even if these were "work" related.
Professional and Institute Committees:
I represented the Imaging and Photographic Technology program as a member
of the Education Committee of the International Society for Optical
Engineering at the annual Photonics West meeting that took place in San
Jose, CA from January 25-28, 1990.
I am the RIT representative on the Board of Directors of the Photographic
Historical Society of Rochester
I am on the Institute's Committee for Pluralism and Diversity (Alfreda
Brooks, chair).
I am on the Institute Academic Conduct committee. We have not had a
single meeting in two years.
Internet Activities:
I am on the SPAS Website Committee along with John Retallack and Mike
Dear and we revamped (with the help of a student who did the actual work) the
SPAS website. This is an ongoing project.
I asked for permission from about 25 companies and received permission from 17
of them to install links with logos as "kindred spirits" in terms of being
intersted in photo/imaging education. This was approached from the point of
view of supporting at least the concept of the PhotoForum mail list and the
School of Photographic Arts and Sciences at RIT. For example, at Kodak:

Thanks, to you, too, Andrew.

I generated, through the installation of a inquiry form attached to my
webpage, approximately 700 inquiries regarding programs of study related to
photography in the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences. The large majority
of these requests is for information related to BFA programs but there is a
significant interest (it does not parallel the number of ultimate applicants!)
in the Imaging and Photographic Technology program. I edit and reformat all of
these inquiries so that the Office of Admissions has an easy time in terms of
sending out appropriate literature.
I continually receive numerous (probably something like 1 per day) requests for
information on the Web that I reply to in a prompt and complete manner. One of
the requests that is very popular has to do with my interest in Infrared
photography and my contribution in the past to a book on by Joe Meehan on
Panoramic Photography.
My PhotoForum and Fotored mailing lists are thriving. My mastery of the
Spanish language has increased significantly as a result of my interaction with
the Fotored mail list where Spanish is the language used.
I started a new "service" with the help of SPAS colleagues and this is
called PhotoQuest. It is a service whereby anyone with a question about
photography and imaging can send a message to the School of Photographic Arts
and Sciences participating faculty though me and I make sure the question is
answered either by me or a colleague or I send a note back
stating(diplomtically) that we can not answer the question.
... and finally, I receive a regular number of messages (probably
about 1-3 a week) that can be summarized by these:

Hi Andy; I have a question--What sort of permission do I need to share printed
copies of the articles on your site with students in my classes?
Also, please update the link to Society for Photographic Education -
www.spenational.org
Great stuff. Thanks
Wendel

Hi Andy: Congratulations on your recent recognition in the Dec. 2nd News
and Events. You certainly keep on being successful. I have always been
proud to serve RIT with the likes of you. Congratulations again.

Hey there, I saw your photography exhibits on your page (www.rit.edu/~andolph/)
and I REALLY enjoyed them. I was wondering if you could tell me how you
achieved such clairity on your shots of the wasp in flight and the bee on the
clover, what kind of equipment were you using? Thanks!
