Andrew Davidhazy - Annual Report - Summary of Activities - 1998/1999

Back to 1998-1999 Annual Report

This is an ennumeration of some of the activities that I have undertaken on behalf of the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences and the Imaging and Photographic Technology department over the last year. Many activities that took place on campus, such as guest lectures to other instructors' classes, committees on campus, etc. are not all included here. I must admit that towards the end of the year I grew weary of keeping track of these kinds of items so the list below is only an approximation. If any item is unclear or in need of further explanation please feel free to ask for such explanation or additional supporting evidence.

Visitations to local High Schools and presentations to High School and Community College Groups at RIT:

  • I gave three 1 hour presentations on May 10, 1999 to students enrolled in the photography classes that Ms. Debra Benedict teaches at Belmont Central School located about 1 1/2 hour south of Rochester. Left my home at 6am and returned to RIT at 3pm.

  • Several of my colleagues and I presented yet another Basic Photo/Imaging Workshop for Educators during March and April, 1999. I would like to recognize the helpful and friendly attitude volunteered by each of them to make that workshop a great success.

  • I was host and lecturer to a group of Lansing Collunity College students on March 31, 1999. I presented a two hour lecture on technical photography to them.

  • I gave a tour and a 1.5 hour lecture to a group of Webster HS students brought here by Patti LaGatta, photo teacher from Webster HS. Section I happened on Tuesday May 18, 1999 and Section II on May 19, 1999 from 9:30 am till 1 pm each day.

  • On July 12, 1999 I gave a lecture and interactive demonstration to 13 students enrolled in a special summer program held for gifted middle school children from the Rochester area and under the supervision of Mr. Rountree. He said: Andy - thanks for yesterday. I apologize for the unruly students. I am dealing with that problem now.... Sarah Markham came up to me after we got off the bus and remarked how interesting the day was. You did a really good job. Thank you. - Robert

  • I made six presentations about the applicaton of photography as a tool of science on November 4, 1999 to six classes of students of Ms. Stephanie Ferrara at Newark Middle School in Newark, NY. Left my home at 6 am and returned to RIT at 3pm.

  • I participated in E3 (cubed) science fair at RIT on April 27 1999 with demonstrations on stroboscopy, polarization and motion analysis with Colorado Video 539 instrument.

  • Again, for the 21st year in a row, I participated in the St. John Fisher/New York State Science Teachers Association "Science Exploration Days". I organized, prepared, installed and "manned" the Imaging Science and Technology booth at the 28th Annual Science Exploration Days organized by the Central Western Section of the Science Teachers Association of New York State and held at St. John Fischer College on May 12, 1999.

  • For the 18th year I gave three lecture/demonstrations on High Speed and Special Effects Photography at the 28th Annual Science Exploration Days organized by the Central Western Section of the Science Teachers Association of New York State and held at St. John Fischer College on May 13, 1999.

  • I made a recruiting trip on 10-11 November to Channel High School in Long Island, NY and represented the College and the Institute at an event that attracted easily 500 local students and to which over 75 institutions of higher education and other agencies sent representatives.

  • I provided material to Eileen Brent, a writer who compiled an article on Photography Programs, about what imaging and photographic technology education was all about. I also provided her with contacts among current and graduated students who she interviewd. The piece was and still is included in an educational database offered on the web to high schools nationwide. The website is: http://www.usa.cxplus.bridges.com

    Individual and Group Exhibitions:

  • A Phoenix process photograph of mine was selected for inclusion in an invitational exhibition of photographs at the Center at High Falls gallery in Rochester, NY. "A photographer's path II, 1999 - Prophecy" was the exhibition and it was sponsored by the Community Darkroom, the Campos Group and the gallery. It was on exhibit from March 3 through April 30, 1999.

  • I participated in an exhibition of photographs held at the Fundacion Universitaria San Pablo in Valencia, Spain. This was the inaugural exhibition at the newly renovated Palacio de Colmina and the exhibition was held during the month of May 1999. It included 19 hispanic photographers (in fact or in soul), all members of Fotored, from around the world and united by a common bond in language, photography and the Internet.

  • Two of my photographs were included in an exhibition commemorating 50th anniversary of CFM in Mexico City during November 1999 and added to their permanent collection.

  • I was included in a group exhibition of photographs by members of Fotored held in the Canary Islands during October-November, 1999 at the Fotoclub Gran Canaria. This exhibition, looked after by me on a long distance basis, is making a worldwide tour and its next stop is scheduled for Asturias in Spain and from there it will traveling to Argentina in April and from there on to Peru and Colombia and then Mexico.

  • A photograph of mine also clearly crediting RIT was included in an exhibition at the Museum of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia as part of an exhibition titled Upper West/Human Mind and Body/Highlights. Thie exhibition will run for a year and my photographs are of included in mural proportions.

  • One of my photographs was included (an will be there for ten years!) in the Ngorongoro Crater program included in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History's "African Voices" exhibit. The video production was by Norther Light Production of Boston, MA and the credit line includes RIT. The license was signed Oct. 10, 1999.

  • Participated in the Annual SPAS Faculty show held in February 1999 with two photographs.

    Guest Lectures and Professional Presentations:

  • I gave a guest lecture at the monthly meeting of the Batavia Camera Club located in Batavia, NY, on the evening of February 8, 1999. I gave a lecture/demonstration on several special effects techniques used in the photographic industry. I received this note: Thank you for your presentation Monday night at the Batavia Photography Club. The high speed photography of the fruit exploding and the tricks with light were very interesting. You were right. I looked up Davidhazy on the web and found over 340 listings. Wow! Looking through them took some time but it was worthwhile as I found some more of your unique photos. Thanks again, Charm Robinson

  • I was a guest lecturer and conducted workshops on "Scanning photography" at the FotoFusion '99 conference sponsored by the Palm Beach Photography Workshops in Palm Beach, Florida from February 12-15, 1998. Unfortunately I had to leave the conference early due to a fire at my home in Honeoye Falls.

  • I participated in Imaging '99, a regional imaging conference presentedfrom May 7-10, 1999 by the Rochester Chapter of the Society for Imaging Science and Technology. I gave an interactive demonstration on how a basic Kodak Snapshot scanner could be inexpensively modified and adapted for teaching principles associated with non-conventional applications such as digital panoramic, infrared and peripheral imaging.

  • I presented an invited lecture to Science Educators of NYS on Sept. 30, 1999. My topic was the use of photography to teach special concepts in physics, mathematics and science in general.

  • I made a presentation at the Northeast Region Conference of the Society for Photographic Education held in Rochester on Nov. 5-6, 1999. My lecture was part of the Imagemakers Presentations and centered on an Introduction to the Phoenix Process.

  • I made a presentation on an "Introduction to Digital Cameras: An Improvisation" to the Rochester Photographic Historical Society on Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, 7:30, Brighton Town Hall, 2300 Elmwood Ave., Rochester

  • I gave a guest lecture at the November 1999 meeting of the Buffalo Industrial Photographers that was held starting at 7:30 pm on November 29, 1999 at the Buffalo General Hospital auditorium on the subject of "Improvised Digital Cameras and Photography". The organizer of the event was Mr. Paul Pasquarello, president of the group, who can be contacted at to corroborate this event.

    Publications:

  • My article on "In-Camera Masking for 35mm Cameras" appeared in the Jan-Feb 1999 Issue of Photo Imaging, the publication of the Photo Imaging Educators Association. Contact: Ken Lassiter, Senior Consultant, PIEA

  • "How to build a basic focusing schlieren system" describes the basic theory and construction details for a unique, low cost, yet sensitive, method for visualizing density gradients in transparent matter, such as gases or liquids. I worte this article and it appeared in the February, 1999 issue of OE Reports, a publication of the International Society for Optical Engineering, on pp 11 and 14. It can also be found on the web at: www.spie.org/web/oer

  • I contributed two high speed photographs to a Newsletter published internal to Microsoft. The writer of the column referencing image distortions caused by shutters was Andrew Glassner said: "Thanks! IT arrived in perfect shape. May I possibly impose and ask for the splash-1 picture as well (and a big version if you've got it)? It's a great example of freezing time, and when I went back to your website to look at the slit-scan photo I realized it would be a great accompaniment to my discussion of the instantaneous shutter. As before, if you'd rather not, or you don't have a big version, that's no problem, but if you're amenable to that, I'd be honored. Thanks again! -Andrew

  • My article on "InCamera Masking with 35mm cameras" was published in the March issue of ABC of Photography, and online magazine.

  • My photograph of a sneeze was included in a 1999 edition of a Time Life Student Library book on the Human Body. The image appears on pages 46-47 of the book, ISBN 0-7835-1353-4

  • I was quoted in the July 21 issue of Wired News, an online magazine located at http://www.wired.com/news/ The quotation appeared in the Business section in an article about IPIX -

  • An article of mine was published in the Electronic Imaging Newsletter of the International Society for Optical Engineering. "Digital Camera Improvisation" appeared on page 2 of the November 1999 issue of this publication. It dealt with adapting an inexpensive scanner mechanism to a conventional camera and ending up with a digital camera that emulates the operating characteristics and performance of sophisticated digital camera systems.

    Other Service and Professional Activities:

  • I gave a two hour guest lecture at Charlie Boyd's Motion Picture colloquium class on Monday, March 22, 1999 from 10 am till 12 noon in the Webb Auditorium.

  • I was one of three judges for the monthly (May) meeting of the Camera Rochester Photo Club on May 7, 1999 from 7 pm till 11 pm at the Church of the Atonement on Westfall Road at the invitation of Dan Neuberger.

  • On July 9-12, 1999 I assisted the Greater Rochester Visitors Association as local "guide" in a project called the "1999 Rochester Shoot Out" where the Visitors Association invited a group of professional travel photographers under the direction of Carl Purcell (ex Popular Photography travel photography columnist) to photograph the greater Rochester area.

  • I was a consultant to the Eastman Kodak Company on a matter involving cross-processing for films.

  • I made a panoramic photograph commemorating the 50th year of the College of Ceramics at Alfred University.

  • Along with several colleagues, during the Winter quarter of last year, I participated in presenting an instructional module to new Eastman Kodak employees on the topic of Densitometry, Sensitometry and Tone Reproduction.

  • I donated two photographs to the Cicero-North Syracuse High School November 4, 1999 Art Auction. The proceeds benefit the photography program at the school.

  • I donated six opportunities to have an avant-garde portrait photograph made to the WXXI Auction. The broadcasting organization benefits from the sale of these opportunities.

  • I "donated" for no remuneration the rights for Bogen Corporation to use one of my high speed photographs in an ad campaign for a special synchronizer they distribute. The credit line included that I was from RIT.

  • I was on the board of examiners of a MS degree thesis produced by W.Attwood at RMIT located in Melbourne, Australia.

  • I again participated in the MFA walkthrough and was accorded the privilege of making my opinion heard (and presumably count) at the end of the Fall quarter. This is something I had stopped doing due to my perceived reluctance on the part of MFA faculty to include me in the deliberations. That apparently is water over the dam because I felt quite welcome this time. I hope to rekindle the relationship and, in fact, offer another course designed specifically for graduate level fine art photography majors.

  • I developed a distance learning course for the Alumni Affaris office on the subject of the Phoenix Process. It is too bad that this had to be cancelled due to low demand because there was a lot of effort expended on this especially since all the support I was promised to begin with never materialized so i had to do all the web design and instructional design myself.

Supporting evidence for this activity is this snippet of a communication from Carole Sack and Christina Mancini

Hi, Andy. It looks like you have a great start!!! But I realize that I have not been clear about how the participants will end up in your workshop.

Alumni Affairs will be advertising the various workshop offerings to alumni - either through a paper mailing or email. Christina in Alumni Affairs will want from you a description of your workshop as well as any special requirements the participants will need to do the workshop. Alumni who want to participate will sign up (electronically) with Alumni Affairs - and pay a workshop fee, just as is done for the on-campus alumni workshops that are being held next month. I do not know all the details of this aspect of the on-line workshops - please contact Christina Mancini if you would like more information about this.
Anyway, when the participants enter your workshop they will already be enrolled through Alumni Affairs. I'll think some more about how your workshop information could be presented and get back to you again -
    Carole

    note from Chrsitina Mancini:
Thanks for the email. I think that your site is wonderful! It is exactly what we hope to do for alumni who for some reason or another cannot physically come back to campus, or who want to take classes online. The alumni will be able to access the site during a 2 week period in June, and will do the work at that time. Our hope in establishing this program is that alumni who are geographically removed from RIT can take "classes without quizzes" from RIT professors.
I am sorry that ETC was not more helpful. I have not had much occasion to work with them directly, but hopefully, since this program idea is still so new, they are ironing out any kinks they may have (I know I am!)

  • Along with several colleagues, during the Winter quarter of last year, I participated in presenting an instructional module to new Eastman Kodak employees on the topic of Densitometry, Sensitometry and Tone Reproduction.

  • I organized several pizza parties for Imaging and Photographic Technology students at my personal expense. In fact, I have never recovered any funds for social activities that I participated in even if these were "work" related.

    Professional and Institute Committees:

  • I represented the Imaging and Photographic Technology program as a member of the Education Committee of the International Society for Optical Engineering  at the annual Photonics West meeting that took place in San Jose, CA from January 25-28, 1990.

  • I am the RIT representative on the Board of Directors of the Photographic Historical Society of Rochester

  • I am on the Institute's Committee for Pluralism and Diversity (Alfreda Brooks, chair).

  • I am on the Institute Academic Conduct committee. We have not had a single meeting in two years.

    Internet Activities:

  • I am on the SPAS Website Committee along with John Retallack and Mike Dear and we revamped (with the help of a student who did the actual work) the SPAS website. This is an ongoing project.

  • I asked for permission from about 25 companies and received permission from 17 of them to install links with logos as "kindred spirits" in terms of being intersted in photo/imaging education. This was approached from the point of view of supporting at least the concept of the PhotoForum mail list and the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences at RIT. For example, at Kodak:

    Thanks, to you, too, Andrew.
    Kris

  • I generated, through the installation of a inquiry form attached to my webpage, approximately 700 inquiries regarding programs of study related to photography in the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences. The large majority of these requests is for information related to BFA programs but there is a significant interest (it does not parallel the number of ultimate applicants!) in the Imaging and Photographic Technology program. I edit and reformat all of these inquiries so that the Office of Admissions has an easy time in terms of sending out appropriate literature.

  • I continually receive numerous (probably something like 1 per day) requests for information on the Web that I reply to in a prompt and complete manner. One of the requests that is very popular has to do with my interest in Infrared photography and my contribution in the past to a book on by Joe Meehan on Panoramic Photography.

  • My PhotoForum and Fotored mailing lists are thriving. My mastery of the Spanish language has increased significantly as a result of my interaction with the Fotored mail list where Spanish is the language used.

  • I started a new "service" with the help of SPAS colleagues and this is called PhotoQuest. It is a service whereby anyone with a question about photography and imaging can send a message to the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences participating faculty though me and I make sure the question is answered either by me or a colleague or I send a note back stating(diplomtically) that we can not answer the question.

  • ... and finally, I receive a regular number of messages (probably about 1-3 a week) that can be summarized by these:

    From: Wendel White

Hi Andy; I have a question--What sort of permission do I need to share printed copies of the articles on your site with students in my classes? Also, please update the link to Society for Photographic Education - www.spenational.org
    Great stuff. Thanks
    Wendel
