Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science
Director Search
The Rochester Institute of Technology invites applications for the position of Director of the
Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science (CIS). CIS is an interdisciplinary academic
unit within the College of Science that offers programs leading to BS, MS and Ph.D. degrees
in Imaging Science and an MS in Color Science. The Center is involved in basic and applied
research in sciences that use imaging methods, and in the development of associated
instrumentation, algorithms, and techniques. Areas of research interest in the CIS include
astronomy, remote sensing, color science, medical imaging and aspects of digital image
capture, output, and analysis. These activities are supported by sources in government, at
foundations, and in industry.

The Director is the Chief Administrative Officer of CIS and reports directly to the Dean of
the College of Science. The Director has responsibilities for the smooth operation of the
degree programs, student recruitment, support of research initiatives in CIS, fiscal planning
and budgeting, strategic planning, developing new collective funding opportunities, and
external partnerships, including the Industrial Associates program.

The Director will have demonstrated leadership skills in the academic environment, an
aptitude for fostering partnerships within the university as well as with industry, government
and other universities, and an ability to work collegially with the faculty. Additionally, the
Director must have a suitable background to deal with curricular issues facing our
interdisciplinary program. The Director needs to hold a Ph.D. in a relevant scientific area and
have an outstanding research track record. This background must include substantial
published work and evidence of a history of competitive external research support. The
successful applicant’s background should allow their appointment to the CIS faculty as a full
professor. RIT is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer and the faculty of CIS
encourages, and welcomes, applications for this position from women and minorities.

Further information regarding CIS (www.cis.rit.edu) and this position can be obtained from
Professor Zoran Ninkov at ninkov@cis.rit.edu. An initial application consists of a letter of
application and detailed curriculum vitae, sent in paper form, to
Chair, Director Search Committee
Center for Imaging Science
54 Lomb Memorial Drive
Rochester NY 14623.

Names of references will be requested later in the review process. Consideration of candidates
will begin after October 7, 2002 and a decision is expected before the end of the 2002
calendar year.
