Life is but a bowl of cherries at party given by Dr. Bruce Kahn!

[fall 1999 party at kahn's] [fall 1999 party at kahn's]
While the details of the party have evaporated as the sands of time fall in an hourglass, the memories live on and these photographs bring back almost forgotten stories, memorable events, chance encounters and reminiscences of just plain good old fashioned fun times at Bruce Kahn's house sometime this last Fall quarter.

News from five Tech graduates ... impressive!

Steve Marchinado says:

Hey there everyone, we finnally got a web page up. Come take a look and send us some mail to tell us what you think.

Later, Meg, Steve, and Robin Marchiando

and this message from: Shelly Bergeron (Michalak) at shellyb@agfa.com

Hi Andy, Just thought I'd drop you a line to give you my updated email. I am now at shellyb@agfa.com. I now work for Agfa Corp. in Wilmington MA doing image quality work in the engineering dept. It's a lot of fun. I also got married in June and my last name is now Bergeron, so maybe you can update that in your records.

Hope all is well there at RIT. I hope to make it back there to visit someday. Have a great Holiday season!

Shelly Bergeron (Michalak)

and from: Scott Hellenbach at scott.hellenbach@lmco.com

Hello Andy, I was browsing your IPT pages and realized that I haven't received any updates from you in a while. I guess that is because I changed jobs three months ago. I no longer work for Cambridge Research Associates, I am now employed by Lockheed Martin, Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems (formally LM, Undersea Systems: http://www.lmco.com/manassas/html/undersea.html). I am working on the CH-60B Seahawk helicopter trainer. The Seahawk is a submarine hunter, it has sonar capabilities and is armed with torpedo's. My new addresses and phone numbers are listed below.

One other note of interest is that I spent two weeks in Vicenza, Italy supporting the Kosovo war effort. Vicenza was the nerve center for the war, all targets were passed here for approval to be bombed and all missions were created and ordered from here. The software that I worked on at Cambridge Research Associates was used to assist in locating and verifying target coordinates. You can check out the features of the software, some of which I programmed, at http://www.cambridge.com/home.html. Unfortunately there isn't any information on that web page about their efforts in Kosovo. Click on applications to see a fly-through of the software and click on tour to see more detailed information.

I hope all is well with you. Talk to you later,
Scott Hellenbach

PS. An alternate email address you can use is scottph@citizen.infi.net (using both will ensure that I get any messages promptly).

and Todd Minnigh graduate from 12 years ago, now with Fuji, sent this update:

Andy, It was good to hear from you. This is our busiest time - RSNA tradeshow coming up Radiological Society of North America in Chicago 11/28-12/3. It is probably a little bigger than PMA and we have an anchor exhibit so there is lots to do. Someone has to come up with the ideas for the exhibit promotional panels. It is all a part of marketing- What to show, where to put it, what to say about it. Big Fun.

Please add me to your tech photo list. Interesting to hear about ongoing attempts to separate the arts from the sciences up there. I can't imagine what they think Tech Photo, imaging and photographic technology is? I think the way it was when I went there was the best. Everything in one family and PPHT was a brand new program between Photo Science and Photo Illustration.

By the way remember John Hill? He lives in Carmel, NY these days and has his own studio and website at hillphoto.com. Remember Loretta Riley? Striking tall blond girl (my other "roommate")? She is married and lives in Beauford South Carolina her new name is Loretta Bootle and she has a son Willie.

Well that is it for the PPHT class of '87 update as far as I know. Catch you later. Any great photo instrumentation jobs with a need for Marketing Management experience on that list? Instrumentation always was my best subject. Hey, check out my FCR products at www.fujimed.com if you want to see what I think about these days.

Catch you later, Todd

and finally Eric Oberg, graduate from 4 years ago sent this update:

I have recently (within the last 4 weeks) moved down to Baltimore, MD and would like it if you would change my e-mail/mailing address to the following:

eoberg@ubmail.ubalt.edu
University of Baltimore
Department of University Relations
1420 N. Charles Street
Baltimore, MD 21201-5779

After three (good) years w/ Applied Graphics Technologies in Rochester I've accepted a position with the University of Baltimore as Director of Web Communications in their University Relations department. It was definitely a hard decision leaving AGT and Rochester (in general), but it's proving to be an excellent move...careerwise and weatherwise :) ! I'm actually planning on taking advantage of their tuition reimbursement plan and starting my masters degree come Spring semester.

Just wanted to keep you updated! Thanks and I hope all is well!
Eric Oberg

Tech students, graduates and faculty meet at Photo East in NYC

Unfortunately the original text that accompanied these photographs was lost as the page was updated a few weeks ago. Nevertheless the photograph shown here hopefully give you an idea of who was at the Photo Expo 1999 exhibitin/conference that was held in New York City sometime around November 1999. Notable among the attendees was Sara Johnson, Kerry Robarge, Mike Klayman, Heather Reid, Lucien Samaha, Paul Reichert, Joanne Kirwin, Andy Jenks, Bret Harmen, Andrew Oransky, and Kim Revak. Attending faculty were Bruce Kahn (invisible in the photographs) and Andy Davidhazy who obviously had a GREAT time but as you can see, everyone had a good time !!!

Seldom seen collection exposed!

[Tech Students with cameras] The high speed rotating prism type camera in the collection of Professor Andrew Davidhazy at the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences was recently used by students enrolled in the High Speed/Time Lapse photography course offered by the IPT department. Here you can see them "guarded" from left to right by Meredith Whitaker, Jeff Adams, Kerry Robarge, Bret Harmen, Christine Pierce and Patrick Harrington. [cougar car] The cameras were acquired over a period of many years, starting with the first one that Prof. Davidhazy (moi!)obtained as a result of winning a high speed photography contest organized by Industrial Photography magazine in 1967. His prize actually was a 3M/Wollensak 400 foot Fastax camera with oscilloscope recording capability PLUS a brand new, brand new model, automobile, a 1967 Mercury Cougar seen on the right. The car has long since rusted but the Fastax still runs essentially like new!!!

Among the rest of the camera models on display was a Hycam, a Nova, a PhotoSonics 1C, a Photec IV, two 100 foot Fastax cameras, a Redlake Fastax II, and a rare Wollensak "Goose" camera control and timing unit.

Bret Harmen has blowout party at his apartment!

Check out this website for interesting photographs of students and faculty at a typical student party. This one held by Bret Harmen just a couple of weeks ago. Can you believe who attended?

Professor Glenn Miller wows 'em at DMIA Conference in Vegas!

Prof. Glenn Miller returned a couple of days ago from a whirlwind visit to the fun capital of the US, Las Vegas and says: "This past Monday morning I presented a workshop to 40+ members of the Document Management Industries Association (DMIA) entitled "HELP YOUR CLIENTS VISUALIZE AND COMMUNICATE COLOR" at their national convention in Las Vegas. DMIA is a long-time trade association of over 1,900 independent business form and document management distributors, manufacturers and their suppliers, across the USA and in ten foreign countries.

There was a tremendous amount of interest in how to comminicate and categorize color (in both subjective and objective modes) without having to use sophisticated instruments. Application questions/discussions ranged from electronic proofing, "www." display of color information and images, implications of good and bad color document design, coordination of film and electronic images for business form printing and electronic media display, to assembling simple visual experiments to enhance customer/staff color "selling/buying" knowledge. All this from 8AM to 10AM on a Monday morning!!!

Had an enthusiastic time, enjoyed an afternoon of 93-degree sunshine, and was back home within 48 hours from leaving Rochester. Met some neat folks, got acquainted with some new issues and applications for color, and made sure the BASICS of COLOR were understood by all. - Glenn"

Asher Gelbart is brief and to the point ...

I am nearly finished with my master's degree here at the Optical Sciences Center. I will defend my thesis, titled "Design and Fabrication of a Diffractive Bar Code Scanner," soon. . I've accepted a job here in Tucson at Arete' Associates that I will begin end of September.

Dana Fokos says this from Iris Graphics

Hi Andy, Thanks for all of the updates, it is great to see how everyone is doing! Also, it is good to see that folks like us are still as crazy as ever, still "at work" at this time of the night! [fokoskids] I have been back here at Iris since Oct. 96, as their Senior Color Management Specialist, and have been having fun...for the most part. I leave for a two week trip to Tokyo, Japan this Saturday to train Scitex Japan on our new Digital Contract Proofing and ICC Color Management sytem and workflow. Looking forward to the trip, except for the 14 hour flight...but that is life! My wife Kate and I have been enjoying our summer with our two daughters, Rebecca (5.5 y.o.)and Carly (3 yrs. old) (see attached picture!!!)

Again, thanks for the news. I hope you and your family are doing well. Next time I have a chance to stop by Rochester, I will be sure to say Hi. Take care, Andy. And go home already!!
Dana :)

Emily Ryan relocates to Buffalo, Amy Brown starts in California

Emily Ryan, who just graduated from the Tech program this Spring reports:
"Hi Andy, Guess what! I am looking for a new apartment and am hoping to move by September. So far, no luck. I will let you know what my new address will be whenever I know!! I will be staying in the Buffalo area because of my new job! The RIT job placement system really does work - I am now employed at Keystone Film Productions as a Photographic Retoucher. My main duties will be starting jobs with clients such as Zippo and Harley Davidson. I will be making the pictures that make their catalogs look good! There may even be opportunity for me to help Keystone start up a web site. I start the job on Monday, the company is currently moving into a bigger and better work space. I am glad to become a part of this company just as they are starting out. Take care, I will talk with you soon."
Emily

And Amy Brown, who was one of Emily's classmates has this to say:
"Hi Andy and fellow IPTers, I hope summer in the east isn't really as bad as the weather reports have been indicating. I just accepted a job offer and will become an employee at Advanced Medical Ventures, Ltd. as of September 1st. My position as Multimedia Designer will allow me to work on DVDs, Cd-roms and digital presentation for leading gastroenterologists around the country. I will have the opporutunity to add to my wonderful RIT education in the immediate future. I will be taking training classes in AVID video editing and learn the ins and outs of DVD authoring. If any of you find yourself in the LA area, drop me a note and I'll show you around. Good luck for the fall quarter,"
Amy Brown

Bruce Kahn cavorts in Europe - Davidhazy rides again!

[kahn in europe] [andy on stallion] Dr. Bruce Kahn sent back the attached picture-perfect "postcard" (with him included in the picture) to share with us some of the magnificent views and experiences that he had to endure during a recent 2 week vacation trip through several European countries, but primarily centered in Switzerland. Andy Davidhazy meanwhile was driving a herd of wild horses while deftly riding bareback on an ex-stallion in his backyard.

Julie Revello weds Sergio Lamas

[julie revello and sergio lamas] Julie Revello (JPHT '91) happened to drop in on August 7 and disclosed that just recently, on July 9th, 1999 to be exact, she and Sergio Lamas were married in Ludlow, MA. They then went on a Hawaiian honeymoon where they had a great time. Shot 18 rolls of film in 10 days! However, since she graduated from the Tech program Julie changed career paths finishing a Master's degree in Education at the University of Massachusetts and is now the Guidance Counselor at Longmeadow High School, in Longmeadow, MA. You can contact Julie at soncbm@aol.com.

FYI - The reason this photograph appears as it does has to do with the fact that Prof. Davidhazy did not wait for the image file to completely transfer to the memory disk, shutting the camera down prematurely.

Summer babies arrive at Marks, Sheridan, Felsenheld, Miller and Davidhazy families!

[marks baby] Karen (Punis) Marks by way of her husband Chris says:

[jennifer/memet baby]
Finally, Jennifer Davidhazy and Memet Ozsoy welcomed a 9+ baby boy to San
Francisco just recently making Prof. Andrew Davidhazy a grandfather also
for the first time.

CONGRATULATIONS TO PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS ALIKE!!!

First Summer Tech Barbecue held by Bruce Kahn

[kahn-picnic] [kahn-picnic] [kahn-picnic] [kahn-picnic] [kahn-picnic] It was not techs that were barbecued but rather on May 19, 1999 several techs (including Bret, Jennifer and Ryan, Jack, Joe, Sue and Andy and Elaine and Rus were gathered at Bruce and Amy Kahn's home for an impressive meal cooked over flaming charcoal as can be witnessed from the attached photograph. Trying to outdo himself Bruce almost lost what hair he has left as the flames from the grill shot at least 100 feet in the air causing Andy to fall out of a hammock and Rus to look on in amazed, yet serene, bewilderment.

Miller illustration published!

[miller illustartion] One of Prof. Glenn Miller's colorful copyrighted (!) illustrations that he is so well known for in the classroom and the lecture hall, has been published in the May issue of the Ilford Newsletter for Photo Educators. This one has to do with color vision, color analysis, synthesisand color reproduction and it is truly very colorful. EVERYTHING you ever wanted to know about color is included in this one illustration.

Impressive Newsletter produced by Tech graduate

After almost 6 months, the latest edition of "The Phillip Newsletter" is finally published. The 3000 word document is yours for the reading at: http://www.teleport.com/~phillip/newsletter/newsv3i1.htm.

Phillip Kerman (The "Phillip" of "The Phillip Newsletter")
www: http://www.teleport.com/~phillip/

Editor's note: I would highly recommend that you take a look at this publication in case you are wondering what _some_ tech grads actually do when they do it independently. Phil worked with Sinar Bron in NYC for a while but eventually deiced to strike out on his own and is now "practicing" from the West coast. Mind boggling!

Joanne Rim subject of Davidhazy photo in Time-Life book

[joanne rim sneezing] When Time-Life needed a photograph of a sneeze they came to the Andy Davidhazy's High Speed Photography lab in the Department looking for potential images. Having none immediately available it was arranged to make a "custom" photograph. Joanne Rim was recruited as the model and she and Andy worked arduously for maybe 30 minutes or so before a "prize winning" image was achieved. The sound of the (we confess!) simulated sneeze was picked up by a sound synchronizer, a bit of delay waselectronically added to enhance the size of the particulate cloud and the rest is history. Joanne's photograph appears on pages 46-47 of the 1999 edition of a Time Life Student Library book on the Human Body (ISBN 0-7835-1353-4).

[davidhazy giving lecture at St. John Fisher College] Towards the end of May 1999, Andy Davidhazy participated in the Science Exploration Days at St. John Fisher College. In addition to setting up and "manning" the booth of the Society for Imaging Science and Technology, he also delivered three lectures on basics of High Speed Photography to three groups of 50 high school seniors each. They were most amazed by the slowed-down action of a real slap performed by two of the attending students!

1999 Graduation Ceremonies

[Graduation Scene - May 1999] [Graduation Scene - May 1999] [Graduation Scene - May 1999] [Graduation Scene - May 1999] [Graduation Scene - May 1999] [Graduation Scene - May 1999] During the 1999 Commencement ceremonies a record number of Imaging and Photographic Technolgy students "walked the plank" and were recognized for their achievements. Present at graduation were Amy Brown, Sara Arnold and Sara Arnold, Sarah Johnson, Keith Krause, Salim Al-Habsi, Michael Klayman, Scott Fernandez, Emily Ryan, Carrie Johnson, Ryan Carson, Jennifer Aites and Gretchen Gast. Mary Webb, Danielle Dittrich and Tracy Trzesnewski were also going to be here but apparently they are too busy at their jobs!.

As mentioned earlier, Gretchen Gast was the College Delegate for the CIAS and delivered a speech to the massed throngs of parents, spouses, grandparents and graduates. As far as I recall, this was the best speech by a College Delegate I have heard in years.

By the way, this would be a terrific opportunity for each of these graduates, plus all those who have already left for positions with various companies nationwide, to take a minute and fill out the form provided below and let Prof. Davidhazy (me!) know what their new e-mail address is, where they (you!) are working, approximate starting salary and job title and description, etc., etc. This will also place you on the IPT graduates distribution list if you ask to be placed on it.

But seriously folks ... please stay in touch and let me know if we (all the faculty in the program!) may be of assistance to you in the future. But do consult your copy of the M&P book first!?!

Congratulations 1999 Imaging and Photographic Technology Graduates!

Krause and Klayman lecture

[Keith Kruse at Systems Design course] [Mike Klayman at IST meeting] Keith Krause, (left) current senior in the program, recently delivered a "guest lecture" to the Systems design for Graphic Presentations course on the topic of "Computer Controlled light meter - problems and solutions". Keith's presentation described the digitization process whereby a photocell's analog signal is "massaged" by a computer program to achieve a linear output even though the cell might have a nonlinear response.

Michael Klayman (right, with his mentor, Terry Kessler) gave a presentation at the monthly meeting of the local chapter of the Society for Imaging Science and Technology, IS&T, that was held on May 19, 1999. Mike presented "Holographic Photopolymers: The Wavefront of the Future" reporting on the results of research he conducted with Dupont's HRF-600 and 700 series holographic photopolymers. These have become a viable alternative to standard photoresist and silver halide holographic recording media due to their sensitivity over a wide range of wavelengths and their processing ease.

Tech Photo One exhibition great success!

[1999 Photo 1 exhibition action] [1999 Photo 1 exhibition action] [1999 Photo 1 exhibition action] As you can see by these photographs, students were recently hard at work hanging an exhibition in the 2nd floor display cases in the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences.

The annual exhibition by students enrolled in the First Year Photography course taught by Prof. Steve Diehl was installed on May 8, 1999 and it has won many accolades from other instructors as well as visitors and dignitaries from several photographic firms who were meeting on campus this last week. To see a representative collection, including all 18 students enrolled in the course, click on Tech Photo One Exhibition. Guaranteed you will be impressed!

After rain delay picnic goes off without a hitch!

[1999 picnic action] [1999 picnic action] [1999 picnic action] [1999 picnic action] [1999 picnic action] [1999 picnic action] [1999 picnic action] After a torrential rain storm forced the cancellation of the 29th Annual TPSA/IPT student picnic that has been cancelled on its traditional date the day before Mother's Day, the informal barbecue commemorating the successful discovery of the Petzval Sum, was again held in the grassy knoll in the quad facing the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences.

The cameras were discovered a bit late in the game though and most of the tumultuous crowd had already left (among then Keith Krause, Jason Babcock and Kerry Robarge) by the time a few snaps could be secured. However, as you can see, a good time was had by all. The next picnic is planned for September 6, 1999 so get yourself ready!!

TPSA Annual Banquet - social event of the year!

[1999 banquet action] [1999 banquet action] How come the only time students get together is when there is food involved? Well, the annual TPSA Banquet was held this year at the Pasta Makers restaurant after much soul-searching by the organizing committee to find a suitable location. Luckily Prof. Bruce Kahn suggested the above establishment and they accomodate the unruly crowd in a secluded second floor party room. As you can see from these sample snaps everyone had a grand old time! To see the rest of the photographs go to 1999 TPSA Banquet Snaps!.

Davidhazy drops in at Photo Marketing Association meeting in Las Vegas

The humongous Photo Marketing Association annual meeting was held in Las Vegas on February 15-19, 1999. Prof. Davidhazy (that is me!) was the houseguest of Carrie Johnson's (current senior in the IPT program) parents in the city and attended the trade show portion of the event. He was astounded by the large number of photo/imaging products on display. These ranged from photo-button making machines, to wide format ink-jet printers to "digital" cameras, processing machines of all kinds and papers, backgrounds, software, tripods, etc. etc. Truly an impressive show.

[Marrakesh restaurant] [Marrakesh restaurant] Davidhazy was invited to spend one evening in the company of top brass at the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences at a dinner sponsored by the Mamiya Corporation of America. The next evening Davidhazy went to dinner with recent graduate Andrew Oransky (who was representing Arkwrigth Corp. at the show) and Prof. Nitin Sampat (who was representing Questra Corporation) to the Marrakesh Restaurant where they experienced fine Moroccan food eaten without customary utensils but accompanied by a fantastic exhibition of what here in the west we call "belly dancing". This experience is attested to by the two photographs above!
