Lisa deBettencourt moves to Send.com

From: Lisa deBettencourt

Hi Andy!! As always, it's great to hear from you! I just wanted to add a little tidbit to spice up the Agfa opening since it mentioned Fred Marland. While I never had the pleasure of working for him directly, he does have a very good reputation inside the company and Shelly was extremely happy with him as a manager. He is someone with a vast amount of knowledge and experience and is highly respected. I hope this info can be helpful for anyone interested in the position.

As for me, well, I'm still over here at Send.com in Waltham, MA. The current title I have is User Interface Architect but am working on a multitude of tasks at the time being. (ironically enough, they do all their photography with a Leaf camera! I'm negotiating some private time with it as I type.) We're going to be launching a new design of the site this fall with lots of great stuff on it to send as gifts. The company is doing extremely well and the business model is really standing the test of time (ahem... ToySmart??). Besides, the environment is lots of fun and the CEO is amazing! But I digress. I'm looking into some MS programs around the Boston area and there is definitely no lack of selection. I think one of the reasons I haven't started yet is because I just CAN'T CHOOSE!!

Well, I had better be on my way now. I hope everything is well for you back in Rochacha and I hope to be out there visiting soon!

Take care, Lisa

Ryan Carson returns from China and goes to work in Clevelend

I am writing you for a couple of reasons. To tell you where I am, what I am doing, and that the company I am working for is currently looking for help. I guess the rest is for you and the Techs if you could pass this on however you see fit.

Employer: Analex Corporation
Title: Optical Engineer

Now, I guess from that you know that I accepted a position with Analex Corporation. Analex is a NASA contractor here in Cleveland Ohio. My project is called Multiple Droplet Combustion Apparatus (MDCA), which is a sub-contract of the Fluids and Combustion Facility (FCF) on the International Space Station (ISS). NASA loves their acronyms! I am going to attach a more precise description of my responsibilities and position because Analex is currently looking for three (3) more Optical Engineers!

Interested students can send a resume to Cheryl Dickerson: cheryl.dickerson@analex.com. I was planning on providing much more contact information, but I just realized that I left Cheryl's business card at work. If requested, I can provide more information or students can just email her their resume. When I sent mine, they replied the same day and had me out to visit two days later, so if anyone is looking, this is a pretty good opportunity working with some cool stuff. They have relocation packages, great benefits and extremely competitive salary. Enough of the plug! See the information at the bottom. If you have any question, please feel free to contact me.

If anyone went on the Lewis Research Center tour/trip a couple of years ago, this is where I am now (actually Glenn Research Center now). I work in the Micro gravity Research Center. Again, as a reference from the trip, it is the building where they had the drop towers to conduct the micro gravity experiments. We are basically doing a three-dimensional vector analysis of Bi-Component Droplet Combustion Experiments (BCDCE). Ironically, if anyone remembers what Ken Brodeur, Scot Fernandez, Shannon Eddy and myself submitted as a reduced gravity flight applicant a couple of years ago, it is very similar to our original idea of filming flash paper and doing a vector analysis of the motion of potential flash fires. We are responsible for the project from conception to death. We build the experiments, test them in the drop towers (or sounding rockets), then on the KC-135 (there still is a chance I will get to fly on the vomit comet yet), through launch on the space shuttle and finally we support the experiment while on-board the ISS. Of coarse it is a long road from start to finish. BCDCE is the first experiment scheduled for FCF on the ISS around September 2K4. I got kind of lucky. As I mentioned, my project for MDCA is BCDCE. BCDCE only has four people assigned to it including myself, so I am really involved with the entire project. MDCA has about 25, which I am included and FCF has about 50 total. So, the groups are pretty small and there is a lot of interaction between members. I have only been here for a couple of weeks and I am already setting up optical benches to run test experiments. Pretty cool.

Anyway, I hope everybody is doing well. I plan on visiting Rochester in the near future. I will have to find out who is still around and visit. Talk to you soon.

FYI: Don't be turned off by the word Optics. I only had the required optics course for our program. They really liked my programming abilities with IDL and C++. Some of the responsibilities are to write routines to support the experiments. They don't have to be perfect. Once they work they are sent to the software group to be written in C for the ISS.

Brady Hackleman goes with Kodak

Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2000 14:15:10 -0400
From: Brady Hackleman

Well, it's been 3/4 of a year since I finished up my degree at RIT and now I've landed my first post-graduation job. I'm going to be an Image Quality Engineer for the Consumer Imaging Digital division of Eastman Kodak. It's a great opportunity to apply many of the skills I picked up in the IPT program.

By the way, I was able to use your website to leverage a higher salary. I would recommend to anyone in the program to use those numbers to their advantage in an interview. Having a reference in your hand helps remove the uncertainty from salary negotiatioins. I used the salaries from the past 3 graduating classes to come up with a number that I thought was reasonable for my education and my experience. Fortunately, my work here as a contractor caused them to raise the bar even higher. Thank you for providing such a wonderful resource.

I've handed out your e-mail address to a couple of potential employers. I was a consultant for Dartnell Enterprises for over a year. They are a terrific organization and have many opportunities for computer savy persons to work for Xerox and Kodak as well as smaller companies. They provide full health benefits, sick days, vacation time, and a retirement plan. The salaries are comparable to those posted on your website.

I also gave your name to David Oles who is the CEO/CTO for Pixel Magic Imaging in San Marcos, Texas. He is looking for a talented, experienced individual to lead his color management efforts. I already hit up James O'hara to see if he's interested. He always wanted to work for a pre-IPO company and this is a great opportunity.
Thanks again, Brady Hackleman

Michael Klayman update

From: Michael Klayman

Hi Andy, I saw your email today and figured it was time to send you an update.

No big changes in my life, really. I just celebrated my 1 year anniversary here at Schneider on Friday, which happened to be the last day for my mentor here at work. He went off to work with the VP of digital sales for Olympus, which bumps me up the food chain here. I am now the official large format expert at a leading large format lens company, and I haven't touched a LF camera in almost 2 years! Shhh, don't tell anyone... :)

I might end up getting back into shooting LF if all goes well. This spring, we sent a person out to co-instruct a photography workshop conducted by Jack Dykinga, a pretty famous nature photographer. As the only LF shooter now, I will hopefully be called upon to go one the next trip in Spring- two weeks photographing Yosemite, and it's classified as a business trip! I always hated nature photography before, but this would be pretty fun.

I still enjoy what I do, it's a good feeling knowing that I'm helping people buy the right lens or filter for their application. I'm starting to hate traveling so much, though. At first it was fun going on business trips, but now it's just getting to be a hassle. I've been all over the country and to Germany, but I have about an hour or two of free time per city, so I don't get to see anything. Luckily I don't go out on the road again until October.

I am learning as much as I can about HTML and digital photography. Since large format and enlarging lenses are a dying industry, a tech degree and digital experience should open up many doors for me pretty soon. As an integral member of the website management team, I have helped develop our site from being viewed by 400 people a day to over 1000. I am also the imaging specialist of the office, doing all the little scanning and digital output stuff that isn't handled by the ad agency.

I am now making $XX,000 after my first raise in January, which works out to being almost minimum wage for Long Island. My friends in Cleveland who make $25,000 enjoy the same standard of living. Although I'm not thinking about it at this point, when I finally do decide to move on, I will not look for positions on Long Island. The only thing I will miss is the opportunity to make music with a number of talented musicians. I am currently in 4 different bands, ranging from a jazz duo to a hardcore metal band.

Hope your sailing goes well, and if you hit NYC during a weekend, I'll meet you for a drink.

Anne Marie Begin moves to El Paso and is making a BIG change in life

Hi Andy,

I just wanted to let you know that I'll be moving soon! I'm going to work for Delphi in Juarez Mexico. I will be starting up a color measurement lab and working with the mechanical and electrical engineers on color matches and specifications and such. My apartment will be in El Paso, TX. I'll have to cross the border every day. I don't assume that will be much fun. I love the atmosphere down there though - a lot of young people and good food and dance halls. The mountains are not very far off either!

I am engaged to be married - this October. The lucky guy is Miguel Angel Pacheco Arzate- it will be a multi-cultural event with my French-Canadian relatives and Miguel's Mexican relatives in attendance. We're planning on having the ceremony as a mixture of the 3 languages. Anyways, please wish me luck and say hello to everyone from El Paso for me!

Hi Andy, I'm hoping you might be able to pass this on to any students (are anyone else who needs some quick work) who might be in need of some extra cash this summer. We are trying to find someone to spend 4-6 weeks in Syracuse working with a catalog company to shoot their product for a web site they are trying to produce. Basically they would be shooting and organizing 800 products during that time, tracking it, probably doing some computer work to optimize for web usage and sending here to Rochester for placement.

It would not be the most glamorous job in the world but we would be paying a high rate because of this ($200 a day), along with food travel and hotel expenses. We would train them to do pretty much everything so all they would need is a familiarity with basic lighting, camera systems, and have a personality that would not cause the client to shoot them after 6 weeks.

If you happen to know anyone this might benefit I'd greatly appreciate it if you could pass this along to them.

Hi Andy, How is Springtime in Rochester? ...always a good time of year, eh?

I surfed across the RIT IPT graduate WebPage with a one-liner about my employer. Although it's the same job, same place we've changed our name repeatedly over the past few years. Currently, the organization is the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and we conduct tests at a variety of locations, one of which is White Sands Missile Range, so maybe you might cut/paste the following:

... works at Kirtland AFB, NM for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency as Photographic Technologist in a high-explosives testing program

5 years ago all our work was on film. Now film is used only in certain circumstances e.g. not enough digital or video cameras or when we need something faster than 1000 frames/sec.

An advantage to Federal employment is being loaned, on occasion, to other government agencies, the USGS, for example. Find a copy of A Century of Change by Robert H. Webb (USGS Desert Lab, Tucson, AZ). The book is a popular account of a decades research in Grand Canyon. We matched ~1000 photographs, 700+ by Robert Stanton ca 1889-1890. The negatives are on nitrate roll film, frames were 6"x8". They were uncovered at the National Archives.

Other work is on the following: http://wwwpaztcn.wr.usgs.gov/wyoming http://biology.usgs.gov/luhna/chap9.html

I feel a meeting coming on. More later.
Best, Steve Tharnstrom

Eric Newman reports in!

From: Eric Newman

Doing Great! I'm living in Greenville, South Carolina. I love it down here. The weather is perfect compared to Rochester. Rarely does it get below 30 during the winter, and on many days it hits the 50s. Even with the warm weather I can still enjoy the mountains. Unlike Forida or easterm SC, it's not flat with palm trees. It's like New England in the warm south. Greenville is booming and is really a great place to live. Big enough to be fun, but still small enough to spare us of the problems of big cities.

As for work, I can't remember where I left off with you. Last fall I earned my MCSE and obtained a job at a tele-communications company called New South Communications. If anyone is interested in a job (many flavors), they can go to newsouth.com. We presently have about 300 people and plan to have 800 by years end, so we are in need of good people fast! Have them contact me if they reaalt think they have a lot to offer. I can likely get them quicker access to the people that can hire them. Plus I get $400.00 if they are hired!

I am working as a Tier 1 NOC technician, troubleshooting voice problems. As soon as they hire someone to replace me, I'll be moving on to another position. In that position, I'll be administering the systems we use in the NOC, as well as helping to implement new ones and train the NOC technicians on to use them at start up. This position was much more what I had in mind. I'll get my paws into everything, from Cisco routers to software apps like HP Openview, to UNIX boxes. The Tier 1 NOC Tech was just a "foot in the door" kind of job. the old job was 24/7 so it made for weird hours too. My new one is M-F 8:00- 5:00. No weekends. Yes!!

Finally, yesterday I just passed a test which earned me my CCNA (Cisco Certified Systems Engineer). Thank god! The test sucked and had me thinking I was failing all the way through, but it turns out I not only passed, but did quite well.

How are things at RIT? Snow melted yet?

From: Eric Withee

It's been a while! I keep getting your job opening e-mails, which is cool, but sorry that I haven't been in touch. It was a tough past year work-wise in that I went for some time without it. The visual effects industry was a dry lake bed for the better part of the last year due, I think, to the fact that studios in Canada are stealing a lot our business, thanks to a loophole in NAFTA. My last job was at a company called The Post Group at which I worked on Wing Commander, Pushing Tin, and Inspector Gadget. I was looking for work in several different industries for a while with no luck. I didn't want to leave LA, but things were looking bleak. Then, a couple weeks ago, after long last, I landed a job at Sony Pictures Imageworks as a Senior Technical Assistant on "Hollow Man", a new twist on the invisible man theme starring Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth Shue. It should be interesting. The job basically entails supporting the digital artists, but its a big job. The show is taking up about 6 terrabytes worth of computer space and our job is to push that data around on the network, convert, archive, anything else we're asked to do to it. Wacky. I'm hoping this eventually turns into a step towards what I want to do, which is producing. We'll see!

Other than that whole drama, life has been a beach out here. I'm still living the life of a bachelor and being in Hermosa Beach, I might as well still be in college for all the partying that goes on here.

Hope things are good with you. Been on any adventures lately?

News from John Grim - back at Kodak!

Maybe you've already heard from Nitin (maybe you haven't) - I've changed employers once again. I don't know how I pulled this one off, but I somehow managed to land a great position within Kodak's research and development facility. My official job title is research scientist. After being involved with color science and digital printing the last several years, its a nice change of pace to be working with photographic systems once again. One of the people I work with you may know (he knows you) - Tim Mathers. Tim reminds me a lot of you, he likes to build photographic devices out all sorts of things (mostly from items people are throwing away).

I'm really excited about this new position with Kodak; the work is very interesting, it has cut my commute in half (I was driving an hour each way for my last job), they gave me a nice salary increase, plus I get back the 4 years I worked at Kodak in manufacturing before I attended RIT (which means next year I get a third week of vacation). For your records, my work email is john.grim@kodak.com my home email is johngrimjr@msn.com.

Hope all is well at RIT, John Grim

Hello Andy, I was browsing your IPT pages and realized that I haven't received any updates from you in a while. I guess that is because I changed jobs three months ago. I no longer work for Cambridge Research Associates, I am now employed by Lockheed Martin, Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems (formally LM, Undersea Systems: http://www.lmco.com/manassas/html/undersea.html). I am working on the CH-60B Seahawk helicopter trainer. The Seahawk is a submarine hunter, it has sonar capabilities and is armed with torpedo's. My new addresses and phone numbers are listed below.

One other note of interest is that I spent two weeks in Vicenza, Italy supporting the Kosovo war effort. Vicenza was the nerve center for the war, all targets were passed here for approval to be bombed and all missions were created and ordered from here. The software that I worked on at Cambridge Research Associates was used to assist in locating and verifying target coordinates. You can check out the features of the software, some of which I programmed, at http://www.cambridge.com/home.html. Unfortunately there isn't any information on that web page about their efforts in Kosovo. Click on applications to see a fly-through of the software and click on tour to see more detailed information.

I hope all is well with you. Talk to you later,
Scott Hellenbach

Andy, It was good to hear from you. This is our busiest time - RSNA tradeshow coming up Radiological Society of North America in Chicago 11/28-12/3. It is probably a little bigger than PMA and we have an anchor exhibit so there is lots to do. Someone has to come up with the ideas for the exhibit promotional panels. It is all a part of marketing- What to show, where to put it, what to say about it. Big Fun.

Please add me to your tech photo list. Interesting to hear about ongoing attempts to separate the arts from the sciences up there. I can't imagine what they think Tech Photo, imaging and photographic technology is? I think the way it was when I went there was the best. Everything in one family and PPHT was a brand new program between Photo Science and Photo Illustration.

By the way remember John Hill? He lives in Carmel, NY these days and has his own studio and website at hillphoto.com. Remember Loretta Riley? Striking tall blond girl (my other "roommate")? She is married and lives in Beauford South Carolina her new name is Loretta Bootle and she has a son Willie.

Well that is it for the PPHT class of '87 update as far as I know. Catch you later. Any great photo instrumentation jobs with a need for Marketing Management experience on that list? Instrumentation always was my best subject. Hey, check out my FCR products at www.fujimed.com if you want to see what I think about these days.

Hello Andy,

I know I have been bad about keeping in touch with you but I hear what is going on from Ben.

I have great news. I took a job with Sienna Imaging in Denver. After 3 years of working at Quark Inc., and not doing a thing that was associated with Imaging by any stretch of the imagination, I am now using what I learned at RIT. Yeah!!! I took a position in the new software QA department. I am the second person on the team and the only female in the entire engineering department, at least as far as I can tell. They are very interested in my color experience as well as photo chemistry. As one earlier grad wrote (this is not an exact quote) "I never thought I would be doing anything associated with color when I graduated and now that is all I am doing." Well I now understand that statement. There are quite a few processes that I will get to re-work and I can't wait!

Also, someone in my company is looking for a phd level graduate from RIT in Imaging Sciences or an associated degree, maybe EE or ME with a concentration in imaging science. Do you know if anyone keeps a database similar to that of Howard Levant but for the Imaging Science Department? I am hoping to help them do some networking.

Thanks for your help and I hope all is well with you. I will send you my work email account as soon as it is set up.

Nicole

Hi Andy,

I was surfing the net and came across a page of grads from the Tech program. It's been about eight years since I worked at Easco photo. I am still in Richmond, but now operate my own commercial photography studio, specializing in tabletop and food, architectural work, and sports photography. I've had my own business for about three years now. I thought I'd let you know my current situation. Things are going very well for me. I've been quite busy and really enjoy my work.

A web page is in the works. I'm hoping to be up and running in the next few months. I'll let you know when it's up.
Hope all is well with you.

Thanks, Jeff Saxman, PPHT,'90

Another success story!

From: MLange@okidata.com

Hey There, It has been a while since I've been in touch.

I guess I lost track of time because I have been so busy I have been working here at Okidata for almost a year now & I like it, It's nice here, they don't pay me enough yet, but I should be up for promotion shortly. Glenn was right, I remember when he said that a good number of us would wind up working with color science, well here I am. I am now the "color guy" for ODA hardware engineering group. I handle all the color measurement, microscopy/imaging & a lot of the print quality analysis. This is all packed out with endless odd jobs i.e. paper analysis, psychometric experiments, pigmented ink testing, digital retouching service for a couple VP's & secretaries etc. etc..

My latest feather looks like it will be, that of a part time teacher. I just started putting together a Color Application & Color Theory (for the beginner) class, it should be fairly basic. I will be teaching sales and engineering people who have no color background. I think it will be a handout, to be read first, followed by a three or four day seminar, Q&A and some demo's. When I finish it I'll have to give the seminar several times in a row, but after that I'm told I'll only have to give it three or four times a year.

Over the winter I got to travel quite a bit. Starting 11/15 I went to Arizona for the IS&T conference, wow there were a lot of RIT folks there. Nitin, Jack Holm, Sabine Sassturnk, Lisa Debettencourt, Tasha McCabe & Asher and a another tech James something. AS well as, about 30 or 40 other RIT alumni (there was only 250 people @ the conference) RIT had a nice reception, although it was cash bar :(, but the food was free :) So, I get back from Arizona 11/22, the 25th I get puled out of a meeting and asked "can you go to Japan this weekend", as in, right after Thanksgiving. So off I went for a 22 day gig. Training, drinking and weekends in Tokyo. The training was mostly color stuff and some info about two new prototypes, I learned quite a bit. The evenings and weekends were free & I hung out with a couple guys from Oki UK, who were in the same training program. The whole trip was an experience, a tad bit too long though. Two weeks would have been more like it, since English is my only language I was getting sick of the lack of communication around 16 or 18 days. I went to some temples and normal tourist type stuff. The next thing on the horizon could be a trip out to Washington State to visit Weyerhaeuser's paper technology center.

Which brings me to my request..... Lately I have found myself increasingly involved with media concerns, mostly paper, and I need to increase my knowledge about this most common of materials. I have been looking in several directions and I am finding valuable information. One place I thought would have been good was the RIT technology center, too basic, a bit of a disappointment. So, I was wondering if you know of someone from the school of printing who might be able to recommend a good text on analytical paper analysis. Maybe someone who teaches something along the lines of properties of paper.

Thanks, MIKE |:{}

Here is a message from Tracy who just graduated and decided to move to San Francisco ... well, let's see what she has to say:

Date: Sun, 24 Jan 1999 20:24:45 -0500
From: Tracy and Doug
Subject: We made it!!!

Howdy to all!

It's true, we managed to schlep all of our worldy goods from Rochester, New York to Madison, Wisconsin... and then from Madison to Hayward, California. I know that everyone has had trouble carrying on daily business without hearing from us, so here is the update... By the way, it is 50 degrees here and beautiful... no wait! I'm sorry, keep reading, please?!?!?

U-Haul was kind enough to lend us a 1986, diesel truck for the Rochester to Wisconsin trip. Doug had a constant headache and I got extremely bored of the view... the back of the truck. We decided to go with Ryder for the rest of the trip. Maybe we should have thought of Penske...

In Wisconsin, I sold the beer-can (my Geo Metro). We had a fabulous time catching up with family and friends. We celebrated the holiday (thanks again to our parents for all the cool stuff) with our families. We partied for the New Year at the stellar establishment known as the Golden Throne Lounge... it's better than Quark's! Gary 7 psuedo-reunited at that party to the joy of all present (Doug and Andy's band from high school). Space 1999 IS better than now! :-)

We then reloaded all of our personal items onto a Ryder truck in the first blizzard of the year -- George, Connie, Tim, and Kayla are the poor souls to whom we now owe BIG.

The truck did not start on the first day of our journey and had to be jumped by another huge truck with a huge battery and huge cables. We made it to Des Moines, Iowa on the first night. We were then stranded in Iowa for another day and a half as the truck would not start again in the -9 degree weather. Ryder claimed and promised and swore that someone was on the way to fix the truck... so when we finally had enough of the Holiday Inn Express, we called someone and had the truck fixed within one hour.

We spent the rest of the trip getting up in the middle of the night to start the truck to ensure that the engine would remain warm enough to start in the morning... Okay, DOUG got up in the middle of the night to start the truck.

The rest of the trip went well, we saw beautiful mountains, the Salt Flats in Utah, and lots of pretty lights in Reno --we put some money into the slot machine but it must have been broken because we didn't get any money back. What was most noticeable was the diminishing amount of snow as we moved westward. We also needed our long undies less.

Finally, we arrived in Fremont --just a few miles south of Hayward-- and checked into an Extended Stay America. We unloaded all of our stuff --now fondly referred to as 'crap'-- into a storage unit. We turned in the truck and were refunded $400 of our $1200 Ryder bill... squeaky wheels...

We gathered all the necessary newspapers and other information and began the apartment search. Did you know that a one-bedroom apartment in the city of San Francisco will run you approximately $1200? A week and a half later, we finally opted for an apartment complex near the California State University -- Hayward. One bedroom, lots of pools, a workout room, a narrow peek at the bay on a clear day... $910 a month. Someday, when we are rich we will move to the city... sorry about the vacation I promised you, Mom.

The day came to unload the truck into our second-floor apartment. Doug and I emptied the storage unit into another Ryder truck an emptied the truck into our apartment... on the same day... in a rain storm. I thought and I thought but I could not come up with a day in my life that sucked worse. We did have some casualties of the move; the microwave cart my Mom gave us and about $150 worth of New York wine. When the bottles froze, the corks jettisoned with such ferocity that they punched clear through the sides of the boxes in which they were packed. George Pavliscak now possesses the one, remaining bottle of my first try at home wine-making.

So here we are and we have learned a few lessons that we would like to bestow upon you all because we love you...

1) Do not move in the winter.
2) If stuff goes wrong with a moving truck, complain... a lot.
3) Don't ever move your stuff yourself, it is stupid. Hire someone to do it for you.
4) Don't try to move wine in cold temperatures. Bring it with you on the plane while the professional movers truck your stuff across the country.
5) Know someone where you plan to move.
6) Bring pre-packaged meat and cheese-product with you when you move. This was our first meal on-the-road.
7) When people tell you "I hear it is really expensive to live there" believe them.
8) Everyone of you should move to the San Francisco area. It is 50 degrees in the winter-time and we miss you.

Hi Andy,

I was wondering, if you could do me a favor and walk into tech alley and write Time Inc. over my senior brochure picture, because I start my new job there next Monday. I got a fantastic job and I am very excited.

The position is Associate Producer in the Electronic Custom Publishing Department of Time Inc. New Media. I'll be working on specially marketed commercial websites using Time Warner content. An example of the work is they built a site for Speedo for the Goodwill Games using Sports Illustrated content on Speedo sponsored athletes. I will help produce projects and put together teams of designers, writers and coders, so I won't be doing HTML 10 hours a day like I have been doing for the past 3 months.

I am actually on my way to Rochester today to get some of my stuff from storage. I'll try to stop by on Monday, time permitting. I hope all is well with you.

Aloha!

We are back in Hawaii! I still can't believe it - a second tour in Paradise.

Everything went pretty well. We arrived the first week in November, fell in love with the second house we looked at. After a weeks worth of making sure it was the right place for us, we moved in... well not everyone exactly. At three in the morning on the move-in date, I discovered I was having another kidney stone. I spent the day in the ER while Dawn moved us in thanks to some help from our pastor.

Our new information is as follows:

Hi Andy,

Just wanted to let you know what another Tech Grad is up to in the world of imaging!

I graduated in 1996 and started working at Applied Graphics Technologies right here in Rochester part-time before graduation. I was then offered a full time position in their Production Department. After about 6 months I was promoted to their New Media group to develop web sites and CD-ROM applications. One project that I headed up was theispot-The Illustrators Internet Site at www.theispot.com This site has been going strong for about 2 years now and won two awards from New Media Magazine.

About 3 months ago I was promoted back to manage the department I started in ( I know, it gets confusing). So right now I manage the Digital Technical Center for Applied Graphics Technologies in Rochester.

So...with all that I was wondering if you could assist me. We are looking to hire a number of people to fill full-time positions in Rochester. I have three openings for Digital Imaging Specialists and two openings for Multimedia Production Specialists. Both require digital imaging experience, imaging software experience as well as some creativity. Great client management skills are required as well. There is definitely an opportunity for professional growth!

I have posted full job descriptions in Job Track (www.jobtrak.com) under the following codes for RIT:

Digital Imaging Specialist: #566839
Multimedia Production Specialist: #579974

Candidates can send resumes to:

Eric A. Oberg
Manager, Digital Technical Center
Applied Graphics Technologies
1580 Emerson Street
Rochester, NY 14608

If you could please forward this message to your 'all-encompassing' tech list as well as to any other professors, that would be greatly appreciated!

Andy,

This is a simple personal message were I just wanted to say hi and give you a very short recap on where I am, and what's going on. So to make a full year VERY short, I am the Senior Architect Consultant for a small internet company out here called NRGSource Inc. (LA, CA) After I graduated I actually spent half a year working for Netscape but was lured away by this other company since there is a lot more opportunity to grow within the company. I am swamped with work today since we just landed a large project I have to start managing, but I will definately get back to you (sooner then later) with a better break down. But now that I am finally beginning to settle down and get used to the area and am fairly sure I won't be shifting around anytime soon I did want to drop you a note to let you know I haven't completely fallen off the face of the earth, and would love to know what is going on with the Tech Dept. And if you could, it would be nice to be added to the Tech Grad email list. Ta Andy, and have a great day!

Joshua

Well I've been here in Kentucky for about a month now, and am really enjoying things. My job is great. I'm working with color pigments, THE future of ink jet in my humble opinion :) The people I'm working with are really great. My manager is somewhat crazy, but I like him all the same. The other person working with color pigments who's been training me is great along with the technicians and other engineers.

I just completed the first step in a humectant screening test to find the perfect formulation. I've also been collecting data on different vendor's pigments with a variety of dispersions, which has been interesting as well. They've been keeping me rather busy, which is great especially after some discouragingly slow summers co-oping. I've even gotten to the point where I can follow the acronyms and code names in the meetings.

My apartment is great, and still a little messy, but I'm getting settled pretty easily. Well, I just wanted to let you guys know what was going on with my in Kentucky from my new email address. I hope this message finds all of you well, and I hope that you are all enjoying your last few weeks of summer before starting classes again. Keep in touch.

It has been awhile since I have last updated you on my location in life. I am now working at IMAGRAPH a company in Chelmsford, MA specializing in high-end frame grabbers serving the medical and machine vision OEM markets (www.imagraph.com).

What has expedited my need to contact you are two job openings. There is an opening here at IMAGRAPH for a customer service technician for supporting our software and hardware. The other position is in Ohio for Piker International a company that manufactures MRI and CT equipment.

For further information on the position at IMAGRAPH, the contact is Al Meola (978) 256-4624. The person to speak with at Picker is Stu Ruff his number is 440-473-2966. Basically, both of these jobs need a good computer nerd with an understanding of imaging and good communication skills.

I should be passing through the Rochester area within the next couple of months and would like to get a chance to see you.

Hi Andy,

I've got an update and a technical question. I've left EK and joined Raytheon Optical Systems (formerly Hughes Danbury Optical Systems; formerly ITEK Optical Systems; formerly ....) in Lexington, MA. I started back in March. The atmosphere at EK was getting too hairy and I didn't want to stick around and wait for the shoe to fall.

I'm in charge of Electronic Focal Plane testing as the Electro-Optical Test Engineer/Lab Manager. We have two very big projects going on right now incorporating our new digital aerial reconaissance camera system into the U2 as well as a system for the Brits. I'm responsible for the testing of the focal planes for the U2 project. We support the system through focal plane/optical integration, testing (lab & flight), and ground station processing. This is very exciting work and our camera system is the state of the art, now incorporating the VNIR bands as well as SWIR and MWIR. This work is nearly identical to what I was doing at Image Acquisition Systems at EK, only this is airborne vs. spaceborne. And we have lots of work, unlike my former dept. at EK. (question omitted)

Hi Andy,
(snip) The company that I am working for is called Printsmith-Needham. I started there in September '96, shortly after it had changed ownership. The first year or so was very hectic as the company was really just getting off the ground. I took Desktop Prepress Systems at RIT, but other than that one class I knew very little about the printing industry. They hired me based on RIT's reputation. My actual title is Graphic Designer, but I have a hard time calling myself that since more of what I do is technical than artistic. All of the work that comes in goes through me first so it can be color seperated and set up for printing. I mostly work with QuarkXpress, Pagemaker, Photoshop and Illustrator. I also have designed newsletters, brochures, logos and lots of other stuff for local companies.

I just got back from spending three months in California. Ben did a co-op there for winter quarter and I travelled and spent some time with my sister who lives in San Diego. Now I am back working at the same company designing a web site and working on some other projects for them. I have learned a lot there but I am getting anxious to get back to school again.

I hope everything is going well in the Tech department. Say hello to everyone for me.

Guess who??? I sorry I didn't get a chance to contact you sooner but in case you haven't heard, I have moved on to "greener" pasturers. On Dec. 8,1997 I changed from ILFORD IMAGING to FUJI PHOTO FILM USA, Inc. in Elmsord, NY. All the details will follow but my new position is totally Environmental, Health and Safety. My title- Environmental Administrator. At ILFORD I use to do both Technical and Environmental, Health and Safety now just Environmental, Health and Safety. I wasn't growing at ILFORD (after 8 years) and of course there were some changes about to happen with them being sold and all. So I think I made the right move.

I will get a lot of Env., Health and Safety experience that I will be able to apply to any industy after awhile. Who knows what is going to happen with all this photo stuff but .... look at us (Fuji) now!!!!! It is pretty cool working for one of the BIG WIGS that is doing well.

Well, I better get back to work. I am the new kid on the block here so... Hope all is well with you and e-mail when you get the chance. I'd love to hear from you. Will you be at PMA in New Orleans?

Hope to hear from you soon!

Nitin,

I wanted to tell you about my new job! I started with a company called Avalon Imaging January 5. Avalon is a machine vision company with a primary focus on plastic injection mold monitoring. Future projects will be geared towards assembly line applications; part inspection and finished product inspection.

Right now we are porting the application to NT and I am writing the device drivers for the framegrabber and I/O board. After the system is up and running with NT; I will be part of the team that writes the inspection software.

Our system is built to be "shop safe" and to look more like an instrument rather then a computer. It is about half the size of a bread box and uses a touch screen for input. Most of the hardware is custom built, which is why I am tasked to write the device drivers. I have never written code at that low of a level, it should be fun but also a lot to learn.

Here is the kicker, during my interview I talked about the machine vision project that we did on your class! Just like you said we would.

Another interesting this is my supervisor has a MS in Optics from the U of R and used to work at LLE, as a grad student, with Terry Kessler, small world eh?

If you have time, check out my web site it has some examples of the Java image processing applets that I wrote at VNI, www.rit.edu/~bjp8350 As you can tell they have not deleted my account at RIT yet.

Hope all is well, when the Avalon website goes online I will let you know.

Ben
PS I copied Andy on this, So Andy please change my email address, on your grads list, to bpryhoda@avalonimaging.com. Thanks
