Feedback form for grads, current students and others!

There is now instituted another means by which current students and graduates of the program can stay in touch. It is through a "guestbook" that allows you to leave short or extensive messages about anything you would like others associated with the program to become aware of. Check this out at: Techy Updates and Feedback You can also send newsbits by utilizing a form to send the info so that someone may spring into action!.

Photo briefs: Graduates who dropped in VERY briefly

[Steve

[Liana David Benkart dropped in to say hello. He just wanted to say hi and check out his old stomping grounds. He is back in the vicinity and looking forward to reestablishing a connection with the photo/imaging industry. Genelle (Quintana) Thurman stopped in with her husband and tiny new son Isaiah. Steve Marchiando, doing well at NASA's Johnson Space Center was in town just passing through. He came with his whole family and like others, they were here on their way to a friend's wedding. Liana Schuetz, established at the NASA Glenn Research Center as a Imaging Spoecialist, came by with her Mom to say hello on the way to the bookstore to buy some film. I believe they also were on their way to a friend's wedding!

Old news, medium news and recent news! From Bret Harmen, Jennifer Greenwald, Scott Sawran and Paula and Trent Siegel

[Bret Bret Harmen dropped in to Tech Alley towards the early days of August 2002. He brought along his girl friend Karen and they sat together for a photograph in the Alley¼s pink chair. Bret¼s head happened to end up in a most interesting location vis-a-vis the high speed photograph of Edgerton. The scene is strongly reminsicent of the story of William Tell. Rest assured that we do not shoot apples off the head of our students!!!
Bret is still with Fuji-Hunt in New Jersey. He was here to attend a wedding of a friend in the vicinity. Buffalo I think. But he said that his nostalgia for Tech Alley and the fact that Beers of the World was just down the road apiece drove him to take exit 45 off the Thruway. They were here for a whirlwind visit and were gone much too soon.

In December 2001 (!) Jennifer (Bates) Greenwald said: Hmm, well, let's see. I'm not sure when I talked to you last. My husband and I bought a house about a year and a half ago, now. It's still in Henrietta, just off Calkins Rd. down by Tinker Park (in Rochester). We got a puppy back in September. She's a handful - 70 pounds of dog, and she's not even a year old yet!

I got a new job last April. I'm contracting at Kodak now, working in the Picture Maker Kiosk group. I'm part of the 'Advanced Development' team there. We are responsible for evaluating new digital imaging technologies that come out of the corporate research arm for how mature they are and how applicable to the kiosk product. It can be a lot of fun, though as a contractor I'm a little concerned how long the job is going to last for me. :p
Hope you had a good holiday!
Jen

[Scott Scott Sawran dropped in on July 1, 2002 and brought along his mom for a tour of the school and to replenish his stock of RIT T-shirts! Scott has been traveling the world, in a manner of speaking, having spent several years in Italy. He is now with BAE Systems, a British aerospace and defense contractor in the Washington area where his company is one of many contractors providing services to NIMA. He says his computer programming background has come in handy on many occasions and suggests that anyone involved in the Tech program currently strongly consider emphasizing this aspect of their education. Perl, Java and IDL are highly recommended. Scott also is about to celebrate his 5th wedding anniversary to Rebecca Ouelette, a student who shared the first year in the Tech program with him and whom he re-met at Commonwealth Technologies, the company he worked for when he graduated from the program in the mid 1990s.

[Paula Paula Siegel sent me the following note at the beginning of July:
Subject: Time to Celebrate
Happy 4th of July!

As we all get ready for the holiday weekend, Trent & I wanted to share another little tidbit to celebrate about. We are happy to announce that we are expecting our first baby! If all goes well, I'll be due on December 27th. We are both very excited and looking forward to the new Siegel arrival. If you have any baby advice please send it our way. We hope you are all doing well. Have a safe & happy Holiday.
love, Paula & Trent
ps. Trent will be taking bets as to whether Santa or the Stork make it to our house first. ;-)
by the way ... december 27th is the birthday of another photo vip! :)

... but then Paula and Trent came East to visit Paula's parents in Honeoye Falls on July 25, 2002 and, of course, dropped in to Tech Alley where I caught up to them and snapped the above candid. Trent is self-employed and offers computerized camera crane (used in the production of commercials used in advertising) services nationwide. Paula works in the management and quality control area of a software production house. They live in Seattle and love it.

2002 Graduates Brochure now available as PDF

[Graduates

There is a new graduates brochure available. You will find a link to it right above this block of text! It is based on the available data and so it has been put together basically only a tentative basis as during the rush of finishing up the year we could not get everyone's photo or information together - so think about this as possibly only the preliminary version. As grads send in additional data and photographs (the general background has been recorded so images can readily be dropped into that background!)the brochure will be updated and improved. The brochure is available for downloading as a PDF document. Click on PDF Document to get a copy of it.

Debbie Krolls' unlikely meeting with Mark Rudin!

[debbie

[debbie

[debbie

It is always fun to get mail from Debbie Krolls. You never kinow what the message will say! Anyway, Debbie says:

Hi Andy, Ok, so get this... I'm working at the card factory and still loving it, when we get this new secretary-type chick who joins the department, right? She and I become pals - drinking pals you might say - (hic!) and we do the Friday night thing and become fast friends. After about 6 months of knowing her, her cousin comes to visit her. The two of them get to talking about digital stuff and the cousin says: "Hey I used to know this chick from RIT that does that kind of stuff at Hallmark." Well she says: "No way. There is no way you could be talking about the chick I am thinking of" right? Then she says: "Deb Krolls?". He busts a gut!

So the next day at Hallmark, this secretary friend sends me an e-mail with a photo of this guy, and it reads: "Do you know this man?" I say: "It can't be who I think it is, because there is no way in hell you'd know the person who it resembles." She says "It's Mark Rudin. He's my cousin!" - I fall off my chair!

Since then we all have been totally freaking out about the whole 6 degrees of separation thing, and what the odds are of this happening. Mark's job at PrimeSource has evolved into a new company called Enovation and he services folks in the Kansas City area. We've been out and about (hic!) and laughing about the old days, and havin' a blast. He is still in Texas with his lovely wife and son, who is now 14.

Freaky, huh? Love, debster

p.s. Mark Rudin's e-mail, which will soon change again I suspect, is: rudin_m@primesource.com
I attached some old (circa 1998) project promo PDF's. I should've sent you these earlier, but hey, the cards gotta' get to grandma on time!

Congratulations are due to: Chuck Torzilli and Karen (Gardner) Marks whose families have recently grown!

[torzilli-michelle-baby

[torzilli-michelle-baby

Chuck reports: Just wanted to drop a note giving an update to all my friends from RIT. I have attached an e-mail of my newest daughter Michelle Elizabeth. She was born on 2-20-02.
I am still working at Symbol Technologies, going on 9 years people cannot believe that I have stayed with one company for so long. - Best Regards, Chuck --- Charles Torzilli, Symbol Technologies Inc. , One Symbol Plaza - Mail Stop E-10 , Holtsville, NY 11742-1300 , Ph: 631.738.3093 , Fax: 631.738.5534

... and Karen says: Canyon James Marks was born on Flag Day, June 14, 2002 at 5 PM on the dot. He was 9lbs. 14 oz, 21 1/2", with a 14.35" diameter head (luckily his VERY PROUD big brother River had a 14.5" head and paved the way almost 3 years ago!) Every card we get, River thinks says that he is a big brother now. He has 2 shirts that say "I'm the big brother" that he alternates wearing each day, with us washing the other one each day. No more truck shirts every day, after he finally has one for each day of the week, go figure!

After a little bit of jaundice worry, Canyon was almost back up to his birth weight on Tuesday at the Doctor's (9lbs. 12 oz). The doc was very happy with his nursing (Mom's milk came in quick after a weekend long feeding frenzy that Canyon decided to do!) He is an eater and a pooper but a very sweet and easy going baby so far. Mom and baby are doing well!

Well, yet another graduation ceremony came and went! Listed in the Graduation Bulletin of the Institute the following Techs finished or are very close to finishing the program. The list includes: Anita Bauer, Jessica Boarman, Kristyn Falkenstern, Conor Kelly, Bianca Koscielski, Michelle Lavalette, Linda Le, Tiana Lichtenau, Logan Lindquist, Pilar Martinez, Erin Murphy, Alicia Novi, Jason Peterson, Andy Prasetio, Astrida Rideout, Zach Schreiber, Kim Sennett, Peter Tate, Victor Trimarchi and Mark Updegraff. ANOTHER RECORD CROWD!

Above are some photographs I made during the preparation stage of the graduation ceremony. There was not much light in the venue where this was taking place so I apologize for the motion blur on many shots but the exposure time was something like 1/4 second! On the other hand, if you would like a copy of one or all the photos I took on that occasion just send me an email with the request! Originals are in color but suffer from unusual color balance problems due to the spectral quality (lack of quality!!) of the lights in that place.

[Imaging

As I look over these photos it seems to me like only yesterday you all arrived here as frosh. Best wishes on all your future plans. Let me know what "develops" in the in any and all aspects of your lives (I guess we can no longer say "develops" in a feeble attempt at photographic humor ... now that we are in the "digital" age, eh? ... so what will it be? hmmmm) . Particularly I would like to know if you end up in some tourist trap like San Diego or Miami and if you have a spare room to put me up for a few days or weeks! Anyway, I promise to be discrete in terms of whatever details you update me with that I might share with others! :) My email, in case you do not remember it, is: andpph@rit.edu

Davidhazy visits NASA Johnson Space Center

[Sheri

[NASA

During a recent excursion to Texas I was invited by graduates of RIT (several being Imaging and Photographic Technology program grads!) to visit NASA Johnson Space Center where a slew of RIT'ers work in a variety of capacities. Most work for the contractor providing services to NASA - the company is Dyncorp if I recall correctly). Anyway, the group affectionatley known throughout the base as the "Photo Lab" is under the supervision of Mark Sowa. Working with him are Robert Markowitz (who does a lot of wedding photographs on weekends), and Crystal (Embrey) Schroeder. Paul Reichert and Steve Marchiando (also "Techs") are photo/video trainers of astronauts in a separate section of the operation.

Also there is Sheri Dunnette, part of the NASA group and working in the area sort of generally known as IT. Sheri took me along to one of her meetings where the availability/upgrade of NASA laptop computers was being discussed. She has a wonderful office in one of the buildings there with a great view of "the campus".

[US Mark Sowa took me on a "shoot" where he photographed a US Coast Guard helicopter flown in just for the occasion to a spot on the JSC fields. The photo he made will be used for promotion of a new IMAX movie about the Coast Guard. My photo of the chopper is included here for your amusement.

On Friday evening the group all got together for dinner at a seaside (well, gulfside!) restaurant in a newly developed area of Houston. We all had a great time there! Saw Rick Slater and his familty there as well. This was followed by a bash at Sheri's house where we got the group shot made by Sheri using the selftimer on her top-of-the-line Nikon camera system. She was going to be photographing a friend's wedding the following weekend.

In retropsect it was a GREAT time. It was gratifying to see the impact these Tech grads have on the photo/imaging activities of a major national laboratory. Thanks, y'all!

Kevin Shoemaker checks in after a long time!

[Kevin

Hi Andy, I'm currently working for Schenectady Materials and Processes Laboratory, Inc. (Ironic Name huh) . I'm an industrial photographer in the metallography division. I primarily shoot macros and micros of failed machinery parts. My company is a full service lab which has a chemistry division, a mechanical division (tension tests, hardness, etc.) and the metallography division which cuts up samples, mounts them in epoxy, and polishes them to a mirror finish. The sample is then etched with an acid and viewed under a microscope to reveal the microstructure of the metal. I take a lot of photomicrographs on 8x10 film on an old horizontal Leitz mm5 metallograph. I develop the 8x10 sheets and contact print them. I shoot a lot of photomacrographs of the samples prior to sectioning on 35mm, 4x5 and now digital. My company is small (20 employees) and so is the budget but I'm doing what I love to do and that counts for a lot. I'm currently setting up a digital imaging workstation with CD-writer, scanner, solid ink printer, PhotoShop, and two digital cameras (one for macrography and one for photomicrography) It's been challenging to get it all working harmoniously but piece by piece its all coming together.

I married Kimberly Rainville from the Biomedical group and we moved out here after we graduated. We made a bet, whoever landed their job first the other would follow. She won. She found her job as a medical photographer for the VA Hospital in Albany, NY and is still working there. She has every digital imaging gadget in existence. I'm a little envious. I came to this area without a job prospect and it took a long time before I found one I really liked. I worked in photo labs until 1995 when I found my current position. I have always managed to find a job in the photographic industry no matter where I ended up.

I have two children, Samantha (6yrs) and Tyler (1yr). I built a house in Ballston Spa, NY right near Saratoga. It is beautiful here in the Adirondacks and I love it. I'm also a landlord (I never sold my 1st house) so I rent it to crazy people. It can be a real headache sometimes. Needless to say, all this keeps me very busy.

Its been a long time since we've talked and I'm sure you've forgotten who I am so I'm including some photos to jog your memory. Thanks for teaching me well. It's finally paying off.

Sincerely,
Kevin M. Shoemaker - PPHT 1990

On the day before the Cinco de Mayo celebrations in Mexico the Technical Photography Student Association and the Student Chapter of the SPIE put on another (the 25th annual!) unforgettable picnic/barbecue in the quad located in front of the School. Attendance at the picnic was unprecedented in recent history. This was not anticipated as the early returns indicated that the students were much too busy to attend a frivolous affair such as a barbecue. However, as the day wore on many Tech students who were passing by the grill and free ice cream bar took a brief detour from their academic obligations and passed some few moments sharing camraderie and good times. Among notables attending the event were Prof. Rus Kraus, Iris, Pamela who brought Chad, Matt, Kristyn who brought Drew, Jason, Dave, Jeff, Jessica, Carl, Conor, Michelle, Sergio ... and these are all your faithful reporter can remember!!

A source for wonder and amusement was the 6" equatorial mounted telescope that was used to track the Sun and visually demonstrate the presence of ubiquitous sun spots on the star's surface (some asked if they could be cleaned off). Also, a spirited game of bocci-ball was a source for physical exersize for the more physically fit members of the group.

All in all, the 25th annual IPT barbecue was an unqualified success. It brought much joy and happiness and entertainment to a large group of tech participants and visitors alike. By the way, Jason promised to save the chicken for next year's barbecue.

On April 4, 2002 our very own Erin Murphy, senior in the Imaging and Photographic Technology program, received an RIT award for Outstanding Undergraduate Scholarship. This is an exceptional achievement because it means that Erin exceeded a Cumulative GPA of 3.85 throughout her academic career and, in addition, excelled in several other areas complementing academic achievement such as creative work, civic activities, employment, etc. At the awards ceremony Erin was accorded the distinction of Rochester Institute of Technology Scholar.

Recently Paula Siegel sent a photograph of her and Trent taken in their backyard in Seattle, Washington. They are fine and sending everyone best wishes. Trent is freelancing in the general field of production of television commercials and traveling all over the country. Paula works in Software QA at ScenicSoft, a software company in Seattle, and is also happy at work and at home!

A couple of weeks ago the faculty of the program made it possible for the high school photography teacher of one of our current 2nd year students to become reunited right here at RIT. Jeff Detrick recommended his teacher for a Fellowship to a Photo/Imaging Workshop that the faculty here presented to 25 teachers nationwide. It was Jeff's (and his mom's!) recommendation that swayed the selection committee.

Karl Williamson and his wife Patti sent us the photograph shown above to introduce us to their newly born precious little angel. Her name is Kylie Grace Williamson. She was born on March 30, 2002, 7 lbs 2 oz at 19 in. long. Karl is a Project Engineer in the Print Technology Group, Heidelberg Web System Inc., Durham, NH Send Karl and Patti a note of congratulations!

In early April, 2002, Matt Hanson who works at PhotonResearch Associates in Newton, MA, dropped in briefly to check out the department during a visit to the school associated with working on an online (distance learning) Imaging Science graduate program. Work and studies are going very well and to top it off last year he married Kim on July 22 and then they went on a honeymoon trip to Hawaii. He also installed a smashing personal webpage and you should visit it to know all there is to know about Matt at http://www.omnium-gatherum.org/

Paul Reichert says "And they pay us to do this?" at Johnson Space Center!

[Paul

Hey Andy, How is everything up in Rochester?? I hope that everyone is having a good year so far. Everything down here is going pretty good, although the humidity is starting to kick in already :-(. My first Shuttle flight just landed on Tuesday morning, the guys that fixed the Hubble Telescope. I helped support that flight, which means we went to Mission Control and answered questions and stuff, which was a lot of fun. Anyway, I was doing a certification run for a class last week and my student took a prety neat picture with a 16mm lens, and Steve and I thought that you might like to see it. Well, tell everyone that I said Hi, and please congratulate all of the students graduating in May for me, they are a great group of very talented people. Regards, Paul

[Bruce*s [Bruce*s [Glenn*s [Andy*s Not what you might think! Bruce Kahn, Glenn Miller and Andy Davidhazy participated in the Annual Faculty Show of the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences along with 25 other colleages from the school. Bruce's pieces included two lenticular images that depicted subjects in 3 dimensions, Glenn's artwork was as colorful as ever and Andy contributed a digital trio of whimsical little faces. Visiting Techs and locals have a blast at McGregors

[Techs Nicole Marousek and Garrett Vanderover, who graduated just last year, came up from New York Citiy where she works at Fortune magazine and he at Estee Lauder on Long Island, to visit Nicole1s brother who just started as a freshman at RIT this Fall. They, of course, did not miss the chance to get together with old friends and so invited the tech bunch to pass some time with them at McGregors on a recent Saturday evening. Anita, Jessica and housemate Carrie, Bruce and Amy, Kimberly, Laura, as well as several other RIT students such as Neil, joined the group for an evening of merriment in the smoking section of the bar. My clothes still bear witness to the event! On the other hand, the best part of the evening was the free-flowing ale, the delicious Guiness "shots" and the warm greetings and effusive goodbyes accompanied by generous hugging that went on. Time of arrival at home that evening was 2:30 am for this veteran photoreporter!

Carrie Johnson knows how to send a year end greeting!

[year

Carrie Johnson sent a very informative card and letter in which she says she is still with Fuji Hunt Photographic Chemicals in Allendale, NJ and shares her apartment with her Three Kids (lizards) and she has spoiled them to the extent they have their own waterfall. She and Todd are still going strong after four years. He is currently based in Washington DC and they are making reciprocal commutes on a periodic basis.

Outside of work she has been pursuing beading (she not only does this for herself but she began teaching beading at The Edwardian Needle) and archery and is the proud owner of a royal purple Martin MV2 (we think this is a reference to some high class longbow if the photo above is anything to go by!). Recently she attended the Maryland Renaissance Faire in Annapolis and the picture on her 2001 Christmas card is from that occasion. Hopefully other Tech grads will take the hint from Carrie and send similar cards to Tech Photo headquarters in days, weeks or months to come!

Andrew Oransky enjoying San Diego and traveling the world!

Andy, I have not been in contact with you in quite awhile. I am still at ENCAD. I am not sure when I talked to you last , but I started here as a Product Manager, made my way to Senior Product Manager, and just got promoted again to Manager of Supplies Sales for Europe and the Americas. I have a couple of sales people reporting to me, and I am enjoying the new challenge. Rumors of ENCAD's demise are vastly overstated, but times are tough. We laid off about 15% of our work force, and expenses are being watched carefully.

In other areas, I have decided to start a collection which I suspect will meet with your approval. I have begun buying Soviet era Leica knock-offs on Ebay. Its a truly stupid hobby, but everyone needs something to keep them out of trouble. My first purchase was a Zorki 6, and I am planning on adding most of the Zorki models and then moving onto the Feds, although I may get distracted by the Kiev series of Contax RF knockoffs. So many choices.

How are things your way? I hardly ever run into grads out here in San Diego, so I do not get many reports. Awhile back, you mentioned this was one of your favorite cities, and that you might make your way out. Just let me know and you've still got a place to crash.

I hope all is well. Let me know how the world looks from your side of the continent. Best regards,
Andrew Oransky

More news from graduates

[Carrie [techs [Marchiando

At PhotoExpo 2001, in NYC recently, I met up with several grads of the program. Among them Bah Lee and Heather Reid, Carrie Johnson (of whom I made a unique peripheral photograph seen here), Bret Harmen and Tom Ashe seen in this photograph. But I also met Michael Klayman, Garrett Vanderover and Sarah Johnson, and with the latter we had a wondeful dinner at a classy french restaurant in the "village". I heard people commenting nearby on how nice it was for a young person to take her grandfather out to dinner.

News keeps trickling in. Paul Reichert, who is at NASA Johnson Space Center, sent in a photo of him and Steve Marchiando next to the Saturn V rocket resting on its side at the entrance to the base. They had just received a new Nikon D1 and were putting it through its paces prior to instructing astonauts in how to use it. So what better subject to photograph to test the ruggedness of the Nikon optics and digital recording system than themselves!!!

Hey, and hear this: Lisette Ranga, who was with Disney out in California has changed jobs and is now working for Canon USA just outside of New York City. She is loving it!

Pilar Martinez and Manuel Fallas

[pilar

Pilar Martinez married Manuel Fallas on Friday, Oct 19, 2001. Standing by the radiant bride was Kirsa Upton. Unfortunately I myself was unable to attend the ceremony that was held in Rochester's unique City Hall building but hope that they will invite me for an authentic spanish dinner in the near future. Recently Pilar also received notification that she qualifies for an opportunity to continue working in the Image Permanence Institute for another year. This is great news for everyone!

Dean Harrington sends news from Xerox

Hi Andy, Just to fill you in, I have had a few jobs since leaving R.I.T. First I was working in NYC for a few years, I loved the job, but living in NYC just started to grate on me. I truly think the only people who love it are native New Yorkers. After I left NYC, I needed a job so I went to work at Kodak, worked there about 1.5 years, actually for some of it I was working in Kodak Canada in Toronto, doing product training and engineering support on their digital products.

Now I am at Xerox. At Xerox I work in their Digital Imaging Technology Center, which is partly here in Rochester and also at their Palo Alto Research Center in California. Specifically I work on the Color Integration project which does a variety of products including designing halftone for printers and conducting psycophyscial experiments on preference and image quality that helps to design products, but I mainly work on a color characterization software project for use internally within Xerox and some of their external products that allows a color characterization for printers, scanners and one day monitors.

The software is composed of UNIX based shell scripts and C code. Unfortunately I always lacked solid programming skills, which I now regret not taking more than the required ones, so I work on shell scripts, color science and pyscophysical projects along with other things the minds there think of. This is in addition to being their, and I use the term loosely, graphic designer. I also make targets for testing stuff like intent's, trc's, color look-up tables and such, and I design web pages sometimes.

It is quite challenging since Computer Science or Color Science were not my concentrations in IPT, but they gave me a chance and they are quite happy with my performance and tell me daily. At first it was intimidating to say the least cause it was me (and my B.S.) and 5 PhD's on my project. But they all turned out to be great, so for some stuff there still is a learning curve, but I manage just fine and what I don't know I research and ask questions.

There is so much more I want to learn, therefore, I am considering going back to school to get a formal taught education and make myself more marketable in a field which they have a tough time finding qualified candidates. Well now time for some mind-numbing T.V watching Take Care
Dean

Paula Srodawa marries Trent Siegel and Melanie Krisantz weds Mike Niels this past summer

[paula [Melanie [Melanie Melanie Krisantz, now Melanie Niels, was married recently to Mike Niels (MIT grad), in California but returned to the Rochester area to visit relatives and to hold a reception in the Bath, NY area. She brought Paula (Srodawa) Siegel along (who had just recently married Trent Siegel and who sent the picture of them with their dog at Thanksgiving) and between Melanie, Mike, Paula and me we spent a most enjoyable afternoon looking over Melanie's wedding and honeymoon photographs. As they were leaving Mike took a group photo of us and I must say it was real nice to be flanked on both sides by such happy and cheeful young ladies as testified to by the photo above!

Phillip Kerman and his rising writing career

Phillip Kerman (PPHT '89) has written two books on the popular web software Macromedia Flash. The first, "Sams Teach Yourself Flash 5 in 24 Hours" was the #1 best selling computer application book in February 2001 (according to Publisher's Weekly). The second book "ActionScripting in Flash" is an advanced book on the programming language of Flash called ActionScript. See http://www.phillipkerman.com/books for more.

Congratulations! are in order! Can I get a copy of the book at the RIT Bookstore?

[behrens-baby

Aloha all! It gives me pleasure beyond words to tell you that we now have a little girl!

Laura Kate Behrens (formerly Choi Yoo Kyeong)
Born: February 28, 2001
Adopted: 15 October 2001

We returned from Seoul, South Korea on Monday and all is well - with her and the rest of the family. Almost the instant we saw her, she reached out for Dawn. She is full of smiles and loves to play. The foster mother and her family were great to little Yoo Kyeong. We were able to visit their home for a short time and meet the rest of the family. They were all wonderful. Saying good bye was very tough because you could see how much they loved her. In fact, all of the neighborhood moms showed up (with tears in their eyes) to say good bye.

The nine-hour plane ride home was not a lot of fun. She was very upset the first hour or so, and I ended up wearing her last bottle for the rest of the flight. Love always,

The Behrens Family - Rick, Dawn, David.... & Laura

We had a great lunch at the rib joint located near the Convention Center and she told me all about traveling the full length of the Appalachian Trail from north to south and then going on to Europe after graduation and then landing the position at QEA in Burlington, MA.

Also, visiting as part of a belated honeymoon, Eric Sciacca dropped in with his bride LeighAnn on their way to Niagara Falls. They are in the process of buying a new house in Massachusetts and by this time I believe they have it. Since then I heard from Eric and he updated me on recent development as follows: "Since LeighAnn and I stopped by to visit last July, we have bought a house, got a new job, and we are expecting our first child in early June. In early December, I started my new job with Goodrich Corp. Goodrich is the same company that used to make tires (as in BFGoodrich), but they sold the tire business to Michelin in 1985. They are now in the Aerospace engineering business. Last year Goodrich bought a small company in Lexington, MA from Raytheon. This group makes Surveillance & Reconnaissance Systems. I have been working on Image Analysis, and so far I've been very happy." Good show, Eric! Best wishes from everyone here.

I ran into Sabine Susstrunk in several places recently. Sabine is sorely missed in the department where she was a faculty member for a few years in the mid-90s. One was in Montreal last Spring where we both attended the Annual Conference of the Society for Imaging Science and Technology and the other was at the AIC meeting here in Rochester. She is, of course, very much into "color" and is enrolled in a PhD program with some university in the UK. Here she is shown with Franciska Frey who is now a visiting faculty member in the School of Printing at RIT.

I received a nice note from Jack Holm (another past faculty member in the department) who is living and prospering in San Jose working for HP Corporation. He was recently featured in a publication of the HP Corporation where he is a Senior Scientist and where he specializes in image quality issues. You can read a rather extensive update on Jacks exploits and see see additional picures of him, Rachel and his children here!

Ryan Carson returned from a year in China and before you know it he was hired by Analex Corporation who is a contractor corporation for NASA Glenn Research Center located at Lewis Field in Cleveland, OH. He is involved with projects that will be flown on the Shuttle and the Space Station in a few years. Obviously the projects he is currently working on involve what is called microgravity. Recently Ryan came back to RIT and hired three recent Tech grads!! Two on a full time basis (< a href="mailto:llschuetz@hotmail.com">Liana Schuetz and Vince Reich) and one as a coop (Logan Lindquist).

And, in a related note, Kevin Burke, who graduated with a dual degree in Imaging and Photo Tech plus Film/Video and who is now heading up the contractor's side (Indyne Corp.) of the Imaging and Photographic Technology Center at NASA Glenn Research Center, just hired Bill Stotzner to help out in the area of high speed photography. Bill was visiting RIT last week with his spouse, another Tech grad, Meredith Payne, and she has been exploring the possibility of a matchup with a Rochester based branch of Fuji Corporation where Scott Johnson, another tech grad is currenlty working.

We also received a couple significant gifts from James O*Hara who as you know is with HP in Boise. They are a superior color laser printer and digital sender. We are very grateful to James for making this possible. Primary beneficiaries will be those students in Nitin and Glenn's classes. This printer adds a significant "counterpoint" to the one donated by Minolta QMS through the efforts of Anna Kobylinska as detailed below.

Our esteemed colleague, Dr. Rus Kraus was in New Mexico enjoying his southern palace near the town of Las Cruces and since he had nothing but time on his hands decided to pay a visit to some grads studying at the Unvirsity of Arizona. So he went there and met up with Sam Hill and Keith Krause. They are both engaged in doing some high-flying research as part of their graduate programs there. By the way, if you are ever near that part of the country make sure you drop in to the Bavarian Gasthaus und Bierhalle, a full-service inn tracing its roots to the Black Forest in Germany.

Further, Michael Klayman, who is with Schneider Corporation on Long Island, was instrumental in persuading his company to donate a brand spanking new light table for Tech Alley as well as some magnificent Schneider loupes for 35mm and 2 1/4 materials. They look like extraterrestrial products! And they perform flawlessly!

Lisette Ranga, who graduated from the tech progrma a few years back, is now a full-fledged website manager for Walt Disney Corporation and is in charge of web promoton and sales of Disney whimsies ... such as the green jump suit (witch's costume) she is modeling in the collection of photos above. It is hard to believe that Disney would be too cheap to hire their own models but it is this writer's opinion they could not have done better than hiring Lisette herself!

Tracey Kear, who graduated several years ago and has been associated with Eastman Kodak ever since, dropped in for a very brief visit to see if the place had changed any. It had not. We spoke briefly in the hall and she gave me a copy of her business card to update the one I had pinned to the bulleting board for umpteen years. She is doing well also. BTW, if you would be so kind (!) as to send me a digital dopy of _your_ business card I could make a project out of it and have a webpage dedicated to nothing but grads' cards!

Toshia McCabe, who has been working for Eastman Kodak in the Boston for a good many years in the area of color management, specifically a product called "Colorflow" (I think) dropped in recently since she is putting a new personal website together and wanted a master portrait photographer to portray her in as flattering a light as possible. So I complied with her request! By the way, Toshia is into yoga and is aspiring to reach a higher level of human enlightenment.

Kevin Shoemaker wrote some time ago but his message has somehow been lost and lacking further details here is a photograph he sent of his family in upstate NY somewhere I believe. Kevin was the first Tech student to do a coop at one of the most prominent National Laboratories called Argonne National Labs, site of one ofthe world's largest particle accelerators. He was later followed by Kimberly Revak and the place has not been not the same ever since!

Todd Minnigh also sent an update and extenmsive details of his home life and lacking immediate access to his note I still believe the picture he sent speaks a thousand words about his current state of affairs. He makes a GREAT Santa, no?

Tracy Trzesnewski _finally_ got married to her long time boy friend and she sent a detailed recap of the happy occasion that went like this: Doug and I would like you to know that we eloped last Saturday, 2 June 2001. We've posted a website with a few photos. Wishing you a happy Spring and Summer! Tracy and Doug

Ken Kostel stopped in sometime during the year and his latest news is that he will be goiung on to graduate school in a program that combines journalism with and emphasis on environmental concerns. I never thought there was such a program but then who would have thunk there was an Imaging and Photographic technology one either, eh?

Steve Korol who is now with Xerox Corporation because Xerox bought the company Steve first went to work for, Tektronix Corporation, dropped in to chat and brought his friend Shannon along. Steve is normally located in the vicinity of Portland, Oregon, and says the work, location and the lifestyle there is just perfect.

Akira Hasegawa dropped in along with one of his mentors, our own retired Bob Kushner who is married to Akira's aunt and who comes back to Rochester from time to time to check up on his estate. Akira's main occupation these days is the successful running of his family's computing school's american outreach program. He brings anywhere from 2 to a couple dozen japanese students to RIT on a periodic basis for "immersion" training in Information Technology, IT for short.

Bruce Kahn was on a Mediterranean cruise this last summer and visited many different places and saw many exciting things. In Egypt he stopped in at Giza and standing there in front of the pyramids he posed for a photograph. Lacking much sense of scale the structures do not look quite as impressive as one is used to seeing them in one's mind's eye, no?

Perusing through some old file cabinets a bunch of dilapidated slides fell on the ground. Upon picking them up and just before tossing them a figure caught my eye. Retrieving that slide and upon closer examination, lo and behold, a record of our esteemed Rus Kraus became evident. Out in the desert somewhere. With his pick-up truck and cowboy boots ... a sure fire magnet for some wild west action!

Although we don't have a picture, Donna Felsenheld sends news of this development that seems to be spreading among tech grads! She says: Just a brief e-mail to let you know that Dan and I had a baby girl on Monday, July 23. Her name is Leah Elizabeth Felsenheld and she weighed in at 8 lbs. 7 ounces and 18 inches inches long. Everything went well and we are back at home and doing fine. Donna
Congratulations y'all!!

Graduation - Year 2000!

Once again the end of the academic year in May or 2001 brought upon us Graduation Day and what seems to me was arecord number (at least for the last few years) Imaging and Photographic Technology students participated in the ceremonies. Most were surprised to see that they actually don*t get a Ėdiploma* on that day but rather receive a Ėpromissory note* that entitles them to a diploma one their parking tickets are paid and library books returned! (just kidding! ... but seriuously of course!) Here is one snap of that fateful day. There should be more but my batteries pooped out due to the heat of the day. We will miss you guys! Wish you were not leaving soooo soon! Write now and then,eh?!

Anna Kobylinska instrumental in Minolta - QMS printer donation to the Department!

[anna [anna A few weeks ago Anna Kobylinska who now is working for Minolta QMS located in Mobile, Alabama and where she is now a Color Imaging Engineer, was here doing some recruitment work for the company. She was accompanied by Mr. Melvin Evans, the manager of drivers, utilities and networking for the company. During the course of the conversation with Prof. Glenn Miller and Nitin Sampat they offered two printers to the department so that students could use them and learn on them.

Well, last week the printers arrived and we are all very grateful to Minolta QMS for their generous donation. It will surely have a positive impact on the education of future Imaging and Photographic Technology students.

The B&W laser printer, a PagePro 4100 GN - 18 page per minute, 1200 dpi, monochrome laser printer with Adobe PostScript level 3 and PCL 6 support - is being installed at this very moment in Tech Alley and the objective is for all tech students to be able to send files to the printer for high quality output at no cost to the students.

The second printer, a color laser printer, Magicolor 6100 GN - (list price of $5,299!) 24 page per minute (monochrome), 6-12 page per minute (color) laser printer with 1200 dpi resolution - will be installed in a laboratory monitored by Profs. Miller, Sampat and Dr. Kraus and it will be used by Imaging and Photographic Technology students for proofing and color characterization projects.

Emily Ryan has exciting news to share!

I was browsing the IPT Dept. News web page and I thought that it was about time for me to send you an update! First, you can send me email to emily@netwimagery.com [emily

I am still working in Buffalo for NET/W Imagery / Keystone Film Productions where I have been since shortly after graduation. We are basically a pre-press company and our clients are mainly graphic designers. We put together ads/billboards/poster for big name companies such as HSBC Bank and The Buffalo Sabres. We have also been digitizing the entire Albright Knox Art Gallery collection. It is quite a lengthy process! If you want to - check out our website: http://www.netwimagery.com (I designed it and put it all together).

And now, my most exciting news!! I am engaged to my high school sweetheart, Reid! We are planning our wedding for this September! (I have attached a pic of us to this email) The plans are coming along quite nicely, although things are a bit stressful at times! But...all worth it in the end, of course! :) Reid has gone back to school at Buffalo State to earn a degree in History. He then plans to continue on and get a Masters in Education.

I will try to keep you updated about things on my end. It is always good to hear how everything is going at RIT!
