Photographic Technology, sometimes referred to as Imaging Technology, has evolved to incorporate many diverse aspects of image generation, capture, analysis, quantification, delivery, specification, manipulation, and application. It includes such well known applications as commercial photography, product photography, corporate and architectural photography. In addition, the field also includes more sophisticated applications such as photomicrography, scanning electron micrography, infrared and ultraviolet photography, forensic photography, high-speed photography, underwater photography, and many other discipline-specific applications.
In addition, Photographic Technology and Imaging Technology also encompass fundamental sciences and peripheral technologies that enable individuals practicing in this broad field to make process, manufacturing and marketing decisions based on specialized technical knowledge derived from a diverse background. This includes sensitometry, photographic chemistry, optics, physics, statistics, color theory, color measurement and specification and all supported by a significant involvement with and mastery of computing applied to imaging, including current programming languages, electronic sensitometry and digital imaging.
There is a unique undergraduate, Bachelor of Science, program of study at the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences at the Rochester Institute of Technology in upstate New York that is specifically designed to meet the needs in the broad field of Photo-Imaging applications.
